The fuel filter is usually mounted along the frame. Just follow fuel line unless the new ones are different. You can look it and the engine air filter location up online. Loss of power can be a dirty air filter starving the engine.

I looked it up and it appears Ford are now putting the filter in the tank as you said but even if it is clogged you would see the engine stopped running I think it is the air filter.
There is a what could be called a prefilter in the tank but the micron filter is along the driver's side frame about midway between the front and rear axles. Clogged filters usually show up constantly under heavy load. Intermittent would be unusual.
The problem being intermittent and not showing a code is going to be difficult. I would try adding a temp fuel pressure gauge and maybe a vacuum gauge and going for a drive waiting for the problem to reappear. Another option might a code reader that can store data.
Don't know if it would help but I use the Torque Pro app. It receives information via the OBD2 and sends info to your smartphone via bluetooth. I have it plugged in while driving down the road and monitor everything on my phone. I think the program cost me about $4 and the ELM327 adapter cost me about $13 on eBay. Check out their app on Google Play Store for more information.
