I just purchased a 2001 Jayco Eagle Class C 261 . It had 18000 miles on it when I bought it and have put about 2000 on it. It runs fine when cruising on a level road but if I come to an incline the engine stumbles or misses before it shifts down. It is like it is running lean or putting too much load on the engine. When it shifts down it runs fine. I was thinking possibly fuel filter. I have not checked for trouble codes but the emission test I had to get did not indicate any problems. Any ideas?

Dave,

I agree with your first thought. Change the fuel filter to eliminate that as being a concern. Potentially, that fuel filter is the original that came on the chassis so it could be 8+ years old. Not only could it be clogged, but at the age, the filter material may be breaking down at higher flow rates and plugging the filter.

Not many folks think about this, but a motorhome fuel filter with only 20,000 miles has probably filtered as much fuel as an automobile with 80,000 miles assuming in the example the motorhome gets 7 MPG and a car 28 MPG.

You may also want to check for miss gaped or cracked spark plug or bad plug wire.

Checking codes will most likely tell which cylinder is miss firing under load do to bad plug wire under coil. I believe they use 10 coils and you can't see the bad one.

I once had a Ford with a 4bbl Holly carb. Under load it would try to kick in the second set of barrels. this was activated by a diaphragm in the carb. The diaphragm had a split in it. The car would run fine until under load and then would just loose power. I don't know if this is your problem. But when you described the problem it rang a bell.

Look on the inside of the frame rail just behind the drivers seat, that is where I found mine.

Thanks to all who answered. I spoke to a friend of mine who is a Ford Mech at a dealer. He said the stumbling was most likely a coil. There are 10 of them @ !20 bucks each. He said a dealer could tell which one was the problem. I will post the results.
