Okay, DESPITE passing the vacuum test, a mechanic is convinced it's a plugged cat.

Of course, there is no listing for a converter that fits this vehicle, and the closest ones that fit won't ship to CA. (It's a 49 state model of course, now registered in CA).

All of the "legal" ones seem to be shorter, to go on each bank...not a longer one that goes in the back.

Ideas? Just buy a non-compliant one?

Cats don't plug themselves. There is a good chance there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed, if it hasn't already.

The way a cat is tested to see if it is plugged is the o2 sensor is pulled and a low pressure gauge is connected to see if it is truly restricted.

If the cat is truly clogged/melted, is it because somewhere the fuel management went wrong?

Have you checked the connector on your throttle body sensor? If connection solid, could be a faulty TBS. I had a problem similar to yours on a ford aerostar v6 where RPM was limited, replaced the TBS and was back to normal.

Just a thought, good luck resolving your proble ...

Torque can't do it. You'll need a different app.

The v10 is too smooth and will compensate RPM. It's very hard to tell and too much work to go down a row of 10. Mode 6 will tell you right away.

CA converters - IF you weren't in CA, I'd say install whatever fits and will pass the sniffer, which are a ton of options... No idea what's "legal" in CA.

There is a chance, but Ford uses a ceramic converter. We had Ford converter fail on a motorhome with less than 1500 miles on it. Sometimes the glass is not up to the job.

Update...it WAS the Catalytic converter. $75 for a new one and all was better.

Well, until last weekend when the fuel pump DID give out. $500 for a tow and $1100 to replace it. :-(

Any guesses as to what will give out next?
