No clue of all the rumors why it changed, but while it dropped, the peak HP is now at a lower RPM as is peak torque (which went up a teeny bit). Went from 362 HP @ 4750 & 457 ft-lbs @ 3250 to 320 HP @ 4000 and 460 ft-lbs @ 3000.
My personal fav. of all the reasons is they changed the programming on the engine to better match the 6-speed - no reason to have a "screaming" engine at nearly 5000 rpm if you can tune it to give you a better match between torque and HP that align to the gear ratios better.

The engine has NOT been redesigned. The bore and stroke are still the same. I was told the electronics were changed. It is still the same engine. The transmission will make a difference. The more gears the better the ability to keep the engine at the best rpm's for power.

I read on another site that it was the rating method that supposedly changed. IDK. I can't believe you'd even notice any difference even if there was... specially with the different gear ratios and extra gear.

I have the 6-speed with 320 HP engine in my new Vista 31BE which is about 16k lbs loaded. The combo seems plenty powerful and the shifting is pleasant, unfortunately it is my first RV so I can't compare to the 5-speed with 362 HP. My mileage between 7-8 using a scan tool. Will get better numbers after a few fill-ups.
Pretty sure LVRVLUVR upgraded to the new Vista and has the new engine now. Since he had the previous maybe he can let us know if there is a noticeable difference.

I had the old 310 HP version which worked well for me for 64,000 miles till I traded it. My new Tiffin Allegro (2015) has the 362 HP, 5 speed powertrain. The power is noticeably better and cruises about 300 RPM less than the old engine. However, fuel consumption went from an average of 7.7 to around 7.0 MPG. I guess you have to pay for the power. I suspect the new ratings and transmission is intended to improve fuel economy without sacrificing driveability.

Ford has certainly done that before. I'd be surprised if they're re-rating in 2015/2016 though.

Your assessment will be very interesting. Very valuable too since you've had both the 5 speed and the 6 speed.

well,.... it's king of the hill so far...6% grade pulling trailer...
33d excursion dp....37mph
34' journey dp 350hp cat...43 mph
27' tribute v10 5 speed....50 mph..
26' sunstar Itasca v10 ... 6speed...60mph
the 6 speed seems to tow the trailer effort less...
you cannot hold it in any gear but 1st...
so best to just leave it in "D"..... or if long hills hold it down to "4" , but it will down shift if it needs to....if you stop with it in "4" it does take of in 1st

I just purchased my 2016 Newmar Canyon Star 3710 last week. It is built on the new 6 speed, 26,000 F53. So I have been very interested in this topic.
Yesterday I called Newmar who intern contacted Ford on my behalf to ask for more details on the change in HP from 362 to 320. The official answer was; it was mandated to meet 2016 emission standards. My last motor home was a 2001 32v South Wind with a V10 that I sold 10 years ago, so it's been a long time in between for me to compare. I will say that I have not towed anything yet but pulling hills at 60 mph was very easy and the engine did not seem to be straining (high RPM)like I remember with my old unit. The transmission also did not have the harsh down shifting that I remembered from the old unit. I believe that although the HP number has been lowered, the addition of the extra gear and tuning strategy has allowed the engine to stay in the optimum power/RPM range. Not to mention that 5Star can tune those HP's back in at a cost of about $415😊

Forgot to mention MPG was 7.6 including 2 hours of 7.0 generator running. I'm going out again next week and will try not to run the gen for a better test.
