Fun is...driving in torrential rain without wipers

Probably a total of around 30 hours or less on the wiper system and they failed. Right in a downpour on 81 in Scranton PA. Managed to get off and safely to a lot where I sat until it slowed enough to work on. Fuse was good, power was good to plug. Motor was way too hot to touch. I ended up jumping a hot lead to the motor and it started ... Lasted another 25 minutes which was enough to get me to I84 and away from heavy traffic when they just got slower and slower and finally came to a halt. I was fortunate to be only a few miles from a CG where I spent the night.

I will try taking it to a ford dealer next week. I think it's a ford dealer item and not a motorcoach item ?

I am guessing it's a bad motor. I have never had a motor go like that before though.

I have had this happen on my new, then, 2000 Coachman on a Ford chassis. I had to get in behind the over head cabinets to get to the motor. What I found was that Coachman pulled in too long of an antenna cable. This cable had wrapped up tight around the linkage from the wiper motor. Just like a huge rat nest. After I untangled the cable I had to wrap the cable, pull it back and fasten it to the back of a cabinet so it would not happen again. All of this on I-90, crossing the Cascades, raining cat and dogs.

LOL I was telling this to a guy in the CG this morning.. he said too bad it couldn't happen when it was sunny lol I suppose it could happen while using the windshield washer...

I can't even get the motor to turn anymore, smells funny too lol

The motor has to be grounded on most wipers because the front of the motorhome is fiberglass. If you have a bad ground it will cause the motor to overheat. Check for a seperate ground wire. Make sure the connections are tight.

Its a new coach with 8K on it now.. rain happened over the last 5K which I put on in the last 5 weeks... I checked the grounds and connections and they are good. I wonder if water got into the motor.. I was through some very heavy rains in the last 5 weeks on the road ..several times .. enough rain ( hail, high winds, more rain lol ) where the cars were pulling over and parking and a car spun out and ended up in the median

That is the reason I keep RainX on my windshield. You can drive in a downpour and not have to run your wipers.

From another Bill X2.... I drove semi for years and always put rainx on my windows every week. Still do it to all my vehicles.

I had the same thing happen to me outside of Scranton PA last month (must be something going on there) and could still drive without the wipers. Unless it's a very hard downpour Rainx works well.

Just FYI, the wiper motor will be from the coach builder or thier supplier. Its not part of the F-53 chassis.

OneRVer it is true. I use it on everything I drive and the water just runs off the windshield.

Thank you very much for that link.

I dropped it at the Ford dealer. They have a Winnebago dealership as well so they have done work on Motorhomes. They will try to see if they can get the motor and payment from Tiffin for the warranty work.
While it's there they will check the parking brake for me as I am still getting a brake smell mid coach after driving.

Thanks
Mr Murphy is at work here, I have a TIffin dealership in my state that I will not do business with and there is a factory authorized shop that the crew is away at the tiffin rally in Ma. LOL and I need the coach for shows the beginning of next week... It's always something.
