CLIFF: I notice you are driving a Bounder. Probably one of the best coaches I ever had was a 95 Bounder 34 ft. We drove that coach for 6 years and it never failed us one time. It was on a p-30 chasis which I did not like, but it was a good riding coach, performed well, and dependable as it could be. I beefed up the front sway bar and put Bilsteins on it to stop bounce in the front end. We hated to part with it, but the miles were building. Back then 50K on a 454 was high mileage.

Homer.
We love our Bounder. The new ones have the Bilsteins and the sway bar. Just completed a 5900 mile trip and were quite comfortable.
Thanks for all your input on the tow/haul.

Cliff,
We use the tow/haul mode any time the toad is attached and when covering steep grades. The tranny brake helps to save the wear and tear on the brakes. During our shopping phase, we drove numerous chassis configurations and decided to go with the F53. I could have been a proud owner of any of the units we tested.

Tom
I plan to start using it the first chance we get.

our 99 v10 run great. ypu, it has 3 thread heads, not sure if I feel like changing plugs. Yes, it has tiny lil rusty exhaust manifold bolts, and one is gone. It doesn't leak, yet. I'll probably tackle the plugs and the blots when I put some headers on it, don't know when that will be.
As for "underpowered," well, I'd love more power, no doubt about that. BUT, I drove over the rockies and back this summer, and there is NOTHING between chicago and the pacific ocean that this 1999 275hp v10, weighing in at 21750 loaded, cannot climb at 40 mph, 4000 rpm, second gear, and about half throttle.
I could go faster if I matted the pedal, but she makes me crazy if I let her scream at 5000 rpm.
I'd love another gear, only have 4, BIG hole between third and overdrive, she downshifts and revs like crazy at the drop of a hat.
WH is phasing out the 8.1 big block, and going with a 6 or 6.2 liter LSx small block.
I got a 6 liter HO 345 HP LQ9 in my silverado SS, and it's one srtong mofo... but she's a rever, 6k plus at the drop of a hat, couldn't imagine that powerplant in a motorhome.

Guess I'll jump in here again. I wasn't aware the earlier trans did not have the tow/haul option. We used it everytime we added the toad behind us on our trip. It worked great on the long desending hills of the northeast. We have nothing but praise on our Ford chassis and engine. The millage was what I expected and I had plenty of power. Like some said, one stop shopping. Any ford dealer who services trucks, can service the motor home.
