ABS System

I own a 2002 Monaco Windsor, this last trip the ABS light would occasionally come on. Sometimes it would come on and stay for a while and others it would come on briefly and go out. The last trip the ATC light came on and stayed.

Today I retrieved the blink codes, hopefully I did it right. The code was 2-1 which indicates excessive gap on the drivers side steer axle.

I do I adjust the ABS sensor gap. Is it as easy as pulling out sensor and reseating it, the tolerance is suppose to be .015 inches. Can this be done without pulling the tire?

I may go ahead and clear the codes and see how it does for the next trip we are taking close to home.

I have been told--just pull out the sensor from the hub--not by the wires of course. Clean the sensor and hub opening--ensures good ground. Then put the sensor back in--all the way to the sensor ring--the wobble of the bearing/hub will "automatically" set the gap for you.......

Thanks,

It does say to check for bearing play. I had both my front hubs converted from grease to oil bath ~2 years ago at Josam in FL so I doubt it's a bearing problem.

Should have said the "normal" wobble of the bearing will set the gap--you might try to pull the sensor back off the sensor ring .015" but you dont know whether you are in a high or low spot based on the normal movement of the bearing---do recommend checking the pre-load on the front bearings every 4 years or 50k miles.....

We had some of those same problems on our 01 Ambassador, 2 things I was told to do. First was the front wheel bearing nuts needed to be torqued to at least 80 ft lbs, in order for the wheel to be solid enough to not kick the sensor away in most situations. When we did get the ABS light, I would pull over at some point, crawl underneath and pull each sensor back about 1/4" and then re-seat it firmly. Restart the engine and drive less than 2 miles and the ABS would reset itself and light would go out. We did have some difficulty over the 7 years we had that vehicle, but mostly on roads that had irregular waves on them, not tar strips or bridge abutments, and usually only once or twice a year. Hope this may help, Happy Trails Bert

I did take some time to pull the front sensor, clean, and reseat. That seemed to help.

My light comes on sometimes when I hit a pot hole or have a hard jolt. What I've now found is that the diagnostic module button that you press to get the fault codes is sticking. I must have some grit in it and when I hit the bump it sometimes gets stuck in. I can go out and rapidly press it and it goes out. I then check for faults and there are none.

When I get home I'll see if I can take it off and blow it out with compressed air.
