Change Differential Fluid
I want to change the differential fluid in my 2000 Dynasty. Is there a drain plug in the differential? If not, how do I drain the fluid?

The diff has a drain plug at the very bottom of it. It should also have a protective steel boss around it so as to protect the plug from damage. On the back of the diff mid way up is another plug that is the fill plug. Fill the diff until it starts to flow out of that plug. When it starts to flow out it full. Will probably take about 5 gallons so be ready to capture that amount upon draining. Also never drain cold, dun the coach 20 miles to heat up the diff then drain it. Also you will probably need to pump it in with a Plews 55-440 style 5 gallon pail pump

I changed mine a couple years ago, pretty easy. Decided to go with Lucas synthetic gear oil hoping it "might" improve my mpg, it didn't.
For some reason I remember ~14 quarts of oil but you should be able to look it up if you know the model # of the diff. If not drain, measure, replace.

Yes, there is a drain plug on the differential as mentioned above. I changed mine several years ago, I don't remember the exact capacity but it was only 3 or 4 quarts as I recall.

The drain plug should be a 1/2 " square hole. You clean out the hole and slip a 1/2" drive breaker bar, ratchet or extension in it.
Make sure it fits in well, you don't want to round off the corners.

Thanks for the replies. According to my owners manual, my coach had synthetic gear oil in it from the factory. I don't know how much oil my differential contains, but I'd be surprised its anything close to five gallons since a five gallon bucket is about the dimension of the diff. How did you buy the oil? I can't find even a gallon container locally, just quarts.

What do you think of this on Amazon? It meets the GL-5 required by my owners manual.

http://www.eaton.com/ecm/idcplg?IdcS...ILE&dID=297625 Follow the link and I am sure it will answer ALL your questions. I know it shows a Tandem setup, but it will reference the general service, oil capacities, and oil quality. I also know it is for the Eaton brand of differentials but I am sure they all share a general service and capacities.

Your local NAPA auto store should have any size you want.

Thanks for the link. It says it takes 4.5 gallons.

I found out that Sinopec is the Chinese national oil company so I won't be ordering their differential fluid.

When you drain it, you only get half the fluid out. You would have
to pull the hubs and axles to get it all, which is not necessary.
Change it now equals 50% new fluid. This is factored into the
recommended change interval of 3 years.
I suspect you will need 16 quarts to refill it after the drain,
at least that is correct for my Meritor rear.

As an aside: A number of years ago Today's trucking( Canadian) had a discussion on using synthetic oils. Most of the people were oil engineers and members of SAE. They were not excited about synthetic engine oils. Today's Dino oils are almost synthetics. BUT when it comes to synthetic gear oils they all agreed it was well worth the expense. Most mfrs. of HD Truck transmissions extend the warranty on a new transmission if it is filled with Synthetic gear oil.
