Odometer Problem

Have a 2003 HR Endeavor 40DST with a Cummins ISC 330HP engine. Roadmaster Chassis built in Oct. 2002. The Odometer and Trip Meter and speedo work fine while traveling. Problem is when the ignition is turned off the Trip Meter zeros and the odometer will return to various readings usually to 27K plus change. Can't find much on this in the forum. Wondering if anyone might know if the problem is the odometer or is it in the ECU. Any help with this will be deeply appreciated. Thanks

Gauge failure

I had the same problem with the dash cluster on my Freightliner chassis. The way that control board is SUPPOSED to work is this: When you power up with the ignition switch, it retrieves the previously stored mileage information from an EPROM (Erasable, Programmable Memory chip) on the control board. When you turn OFF the ignition switch, it is supposed to store the current information back to the EPROM. The circuitry that does the STORE process has failed for some reason. Since the components on the circuit board are not intended to be individually repairable, the only realistic option is to replace the circuit board. In my case, new ones were over $900 and used ones from salvage yards with no guaranty were half that. I choose to live with it and started writing down the trip meter mileage each time I shut it off in order to keep track of my mileage. The mileage record on the ECM was not affected, so I could recover the information periodically from that perspective. Hope this helps you to understand what has happened.

Odometer Problem

Thank You for the response to my question. It's much appreciated. If I understand correctly the EPROM is located in the speedometer circuitry and not in the ECM. I've been researching the SilverLeaf engine monitor. If the total mileage is in memory in the ECM. The SilverLeaf would display it correct?

Yes! VMSpc should correctly display the information from the ECM. Considering the age of your chassis, before I pursued things any further, I would verify all ground connections from the gauge cluster. Oxidation over time deteriorates the connections and a lost ground will cause just these kind of failures. Your Roadmaster will have a little different design than my Freightliner, but they are pretty similar. Before you start replacing expensive parts, I would find a speedometer shop that specializes in electronic gauges. They can probably test your gauge cluster and tell you quickly what has failed. Good luck.
