Severe intermittent 03 Scepter rear shaking
Hope someone can help me diagnose this one. I have a 2003 38' Scepter on the RR8S chassis. 55k miles. Original shocks (new Bilsteins ordered). Just returned from a 5000 mile trip. 6 times during the trip there was a violent shaking in the rear, felt like side-to-side, which occurred at fairly low speeds (once at 5-10 mph, other times up to 45 mph). This shaking was severe enough that I stopped each time, IMMEDIATELY. Feels like the rear end is loose and shaking BAD. Each time I checked under the coach, examined all suspension parts I can see, and no problem evident. Once the coach has been stopped, then I could resume travel and everything felt normal - sometimes for over 2000 miles til it happened again. It DID seem to occur after going over some type of raised bump in the road - once after I went over a curb, once after going over some 1" high round lane markers. Bump did not have to be on one side - either could cause the shaking. But it's inconsistent - plenty of times in all that travel I went over bumps with no reaction.
Today I had a frame and alignment shop check it and they could not find anything wrong. Ride height appears fine but I will check that tomorrow.
I had thought maybe suspension bushings. They all LOOK fine from the underneath.
Anyone out there had this problem or suggestions how to figure it out?

Two things come to mind for me:
1. Have you changed the rear axle lube lately? Might want to do that and have an oil analysis done. Could be a issue with the carrier bearings, pinion bearings, spider gears, or ring and pinion.
2. Have you checked the rear wheel bearings? Could be starting to fail or out of adjustment.
Best of luck on a solution.

Probably a long shot but check out the engine/frame mounts.

Ken -Good thought. It had occurred to me that it acts like it would IF a rear wheel bearing was a little loose and perhaps could make it vibrate wildly. I don't see how the other bearings could cause it, but if the other checks don't find it I will have the whole rear end checked. Thanks
Steve - I did have the motor mounts checked and they are fine. Body motion alone from loose mounts couldn't cause this rapid and violent a shaking. Thanks, Bruce

I hope Vanwill sees this thread. He knows more about Roadmaster suspensions than anyone I know.

I have been having the same symptoms on my 07 Cayman 36PDQ RR4R. Happened 3 times last summer. Had front airbags and shocks replaced. Yesterday it happened twice both time after major pavement bumps. Feels like a side to side wobble like the wheels are not vertical on the axle.
Did you ever discover the cause/fix???
Any info would be appreciated!

Patrick,
Does this happen when towing your Cherokee? If so, it may be that your Jeep has death wobble and is causing the shaking. There have been several threads on this.
