Will over filling the rear axle cause problems?

I just checked the rear axle oil level and it was low. I think. Hard to tell as where I park the motorhome is unlevel. Even though I have it on boards to compensate for the driveway slope there wasn't anyplace I could put a level on the axle to verify just how level it was. I was really suprised that the oil level was that low. No obvious signs of leakage from the plugs.
The concern I have is that I added about a quart 1/2 to bring it up to the bottom of the add hole. What will happen if I overfilled it because of a lean in the axle.
My thinking is its better to be overfilled some then undefilled that much.
Anybody know?
Thanks.

The amount of your overfill is quite small. The main reason for not overfilling is help keep the temperature down as a result of mixing of the fluid. This is only really important during the warmerest weather. In addition there is more tendandance for air entrainment which if already real full will force oil out of the breather. Then if the breather is not open the seal will also be blown out and all the oil will leak out. Therefore I suggest that you examine the breather and make sure it is not plugged up with paint or mug dobbers or what ever. Then I would not worry any further.

I agree with Targaboat. A little overfilled is not a problem and if it is running out the hole until it stops at the level your MH was at that is not a real overfill. You should first drive the MH around to get the gear oil hot because it will expand then to check it. Being low is dangerous because that gear oil is used to lubricate the wheel bearings on most axles. So if low the bearings will not get the correct lubrication and will overheat and fail. Normally at the factory on the initial gear oil fill they just fill it until it runs back out of the hole and never check it again. Now the gear oil slowly fills the wheel hub bearing areas and the level goes down and they should check it again and top it off but they never do. My guess is that is why it was a little low. Probably you should check your level again after it has been driven to see if the level droped again as it flowed into the wheel bearing hubs.
