Are the RV memberships worth it?
My wife and I will retire soon and plan to hit the road for 6-8 months each year. We are trying to figure out a budget for our travels and are considering joining a membership type club, such as 1000 trails or Coast to Coast. Does anyone have experience with these groups and are they worth the investment? Are there benefits to one over another?

Welcome! We are Thousand Trails members, the regional program. Good deal if the campgrounds are where they work for you and you use it.
Passport America is a discount program that is inexpensive and pays for itself with just a couple three days of use per year.

Welcome. I'm not retired and don't use a membership program. When we take off for our annual month long holiday I don't want to be restricted as to what CG I use. That being said...For folks on a budget who don't mind using specific parks that honor their program it might work for them. I've also heard that some of the membership parks are getting old and looking tired.......Do your homework, maybe visit a few specific parks and make your own decision.

If just starting out, I'd recommend Passport America. It's relatively inexpensive and as was mentioned it'll pay for itself rather quickly. The other memberships will dictate where you want to go. We looked at them and decided we didn't spend that much time in those areas to make it financially feasible. I would wait to see how, and where you spend the most time.

Escapees.com has a deal right now for $30 I joined and I don't own a rig yet. Great info on their site and their forum, well worth the money!

We are members of Coast to Coast, Good Sam, FMCA, Harvest Host and RV Golf Club. Take a look at these, they pay for themselves in no time and are easy to use.

We have been full timing for 2 years now and love the Passport America membership we have. It pays for itself in a matter of a few months!

We purchased a camping pass from Thousand Trails. The zone purchased was southwest. The CGs in the plan we visited were not up to our standards, kind'a run down. That plan was not renewed. Instead we now have Passport America, KOA and Good Sam and are pleased.

Thousand Trails (now at 3 zones), Passport America, and Good Sam here. TT has been a good value for us, Passport America pays for itself in 2 or 3 nights of camping, and Good Sam fills in the gap with additional discounts in other places.

The Passport America rates are great, and more than most Thousand Trails parks are worth. Avoid TT

We have Passport America and Good Sam. We belonged to Coast to Coast a million years ago and would never join something like that again. Like to have never gotten out of it! Maybe they have changed over the years? You should check it out thoroughly.

Most of our camping is at state parks who generally don't offer any discounts. We are Good Sam members primarily for the discount we receive when making purchases there, but camping discounts are a bonus when needed. We have joined Passport America in the past when we were on extended RV trips. As mentioned previously, they pay for themselves in 3 or 4 uses and are a great investment.

We are members of a smaller campground membership with access to RPI exchange campgrounds. We find that we can book sites even during peak times and not have to worry about doing it 6 months or a year in advance like some of the public parks. There are places where choice of parks is limited, so we use our Good Sam discount at "out of network" parks. We're still too young for some of the senior perks and some of the ones where we do qualify have political agendas which are not inline with our own, so we look for savings where we can and try to balance work and recreation. I'm still working full time, but we get away 50-60 nights per year (even if it is within 100 miles of home).
