Aircraft Restoration as a Hobby

Haven't seen this subject yet. I retired from Boeing and couldn't stay away from airplanes, so I volunteer at the Seattle Museum of Flights Restoration center in Everett Washington. I'm presently helping restore a Boeing 727 serial # 0001 to flying status to fly down to the Museum in Seattle. This is one of the only Restoration centers that you can actually enter and see the work in progress. For any Aircraft buffs the Everett site is a gold mine. Boeing has "The Future of Flight" attraction that includes a factory tour, Paul Allen has a collection of Flying Classic WWll aircraft, ?? Sessions also has a collection of Flying mostly WWll aircraft and We have our Restoration shop their. Some Pics.

Jpony56hd,

Keep up the good work. We love visiting air museums as we travel. Its great to see them in good shape, especially if they are brought back to flight status.

One of my fond memories, 106 Mustangs in a line at an airshow in Columbus, Ohio.

We have a local air museum which does a WWII weekend in June. I have seen a B-29 (Fifi) fly over the house.

Very cool Richard. Sometime in the next couple of years I hope to get back to the city of my birth and I'll have to include a visit to the museum on my list of stops.

Back in the 80s I was a regular volunteer at the EAA museum in Oshkosh WI, specifically the Pioneer airport area behind the main museum. I asked one of the aircraft restoration specialists one time just how much of the original aircraft he needed to do a restoration. His reply - "the data plate".

The B-17 that used to be a gas station canopy in Milwaukee Oregon is currently being restored to flying condition in Salem, OR. It sat on pylons for 70 years as a gas station canopy and later a restaurant attraction. The Milwaukie Bomber: 'It's not going to last much longer' | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon Had less than 40 hours flying time. It became home for pigeons and was picked over by souvenir seekers during that 70 years but is in surprisingly decent shape, all things considered. Somebody "borrowed" the data plate so if you know anybody who has one stashed away in their mementos, there are some folks who would like to have one. Also, if you know anybody who has a couple million bucks burning a hole in their pocket, donations are gladly accepted. They will be opening their museum in Salem on June 13th and will feature a B-25 you can take a flight in. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Warbi...33126836903010
Maybe some of you aircraft buffs can make it!! I have been doing some volunteer work for them, no restoration work yet but they will be needing folks with those skills soon.

Our Boeing 247D was doing engine run ups today, prior to flying again after a few years down due to the landing gear having to be rebuilt. A little banging, popping and some smoke and it came to life again. Brings a tear to the eyes just standing there and seeing history before your eyes. I wish I'd had a way to video it but wasn't prepared for it.

The 247 was "state of the art" until the "Gooney Bird" came along. That's a pretty sweet 247, my late wife's father flew one of those for several years when he was a captain for one of the early airline companies. Amazing how far flying has come....and how poor the service has gotten....

I know what you mean! There is no sound in the world like an old radial coming to life. Early in my career I had the privilege to fly DC-3s for a couple of years. They were passenger flights, and the planes were clean and very well kept. It was like stepping back into history every day!

For those in the area, Tomorrow 10-5 is "Paine Field Aviation Day" All the museums get together and fly their airplanes. I know our 247D will be there along with the recently restored Crusader Flight test plane and possibly our Super Corsair ( one of only two in existence). I don't think we have our FAA Airworthiness Certificate that would allow us to fly it yet, but it won't stop it from running.

Here's some of the work I'm doing on our Boeing 727 serial #0001. This is all on the left hand wing.

Spent Saturday watching my neighbor put the final touches on getting this Beech 18 flying again. Been sitting for a couple of years, after a couple of days of work and test flights it's on it's way to California for the summer. Nothing like the sound of round motors, the more the better!!!

Thanks for all your work! The Museum of Flight is one of my favorite museums, although I haven't been able to get up there in a few years...but I'm hoping to get there next month on our big trip.

Thanks Pony - very interesting! Are spares still available for those badly corroded three-holer parts or are you having to manufacturer new, by hand??

Richard,

What a great hobby. Keep the pictures coming. I'm a viewer rather than a doer, but love aircraft. We're stopping at the Glenn Curtis museum in Hammondsport NY and the Rheinbeck NY Aerodrome this June on the way to the Alfa Romeo convention in Rhode Island.

Nothing sounds or smells quite like a round engine! My first flight and flight lesson was in a DC-3. Went on to fly 727s both 100s and 200s.
Who knows what an "outboard aileron lockout is? :-) I do :-) :-)
