I reenact with my oldest son who lives in West Virginia. We are with the 2nd Virginia, Co. D Stonewall Jackson's brigade.

Awesome past time. Always wanted to try it but with my work I never had the opportunity.

I did it for several years in the 80s and early 90s, but gave it up when I got too old. We were the 1st. Louisiana cavalry.

I have the greatest respect for the cavalry units. It's a lot of work to prepare and maintain the animals. All in all, CW reenacting is one way of immersing yourself in history.

I used to do 22nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment out of Belleville, IL when we lived in that area. Also did World War 2 for a time. The family was able to participate in CW as well. It was a lot of fun, and we learned a lot about the history of the period.

Thank you for sharing the pictures. I have visited a number of CW battlefields the last one being New Market and "The Field of Lost Shoes." Rarely seen in that war, the few proud cadets that were engaged, line abreast, gave the full measure of duty and achieved Glory for all time! Even to this day during roll call the names of the fallen cadets are recited and the response is "Killed on the Field of Honor," quite a moving experience.

I shared this experience with 2 of our grandchildren this past summer.

We reenacted last July at Belington, WV site of the Battle of Laurel Mountain (one of the first land battles fought in the Civil War). While we were there, my son, grandson and I participated as part of the honor guard during the services to honor the fallen Confederate troops from the battle. This battle is one of the few that are actually reenacted on the very ground of the original battle. And yes, the trousers worn by my grandson with the flag are correct. Many Confederate soldiers from this period wore bits and pieces of Federal uniforms (the cap) and civilian clothes (the trousers). The flag is also correct for the period, the Don't Tread on Me flag made famous during the Revolutionary War.

My son and I will be joining our unit, 2nd Va. Co. D, Stonewall Jackson Brigade at Gettysburg on Sept. 17, 18 and 19th. We will be doing a living history on Culp's Hill where this company fought during this historic battle. If any of you are in the Gettysburg area then, please come out and say howdy.
