Point well made, Jim. Being cats, they'll find the most out of the way places to hide, especially when scared or nervous, and give not a peep to let the owner know where that is. Better safe ....

Any Watercolorist Out There?

So I paint and enter local county fairs for competition. I also entered one juried show and made it into that with acrylic paintings. That is enough. I don't really want to make money off of my hobby.
I noticed your signature. Do you have spinning wheels? I have two, very neglected wheels. I do still knit and quilt. Tried weaving and didn't care for it. Like you, I have many hobbies :-)

Hi Karen --
The OP (Original Poster), Artraveler, asked about traveling with her cat Mootsie. Sorry for the confusion. Sounds as if your cats are no problem for you. (Boy, do I miss mine!)
It's really cool that you juried into a show! I've never even considered trying that.
As for the sig line, yes I have wheels! The Ashford Traditional, my first, sits neglected in the studio. The Majacraft Little Gem and the Bosworth charkha both live in the living room where they get the most use.
My quilting is entirely small stuff thus far, although I admire those bed-sized ones. I knit, too, and tat. Crochet not so much.
Weaving is another vice. I'm attracted to the small low tech looms, but also have one each table- and floor-loom. They do get dusty, though, while I do all those other things, like painting and taking classes.
I see you are in or near Tracy. We have actually been past there, about 3 years ago. At the time we were looking for a campground, I think. Small world, when everyone is so mobile!
Share a bit of your work, would you? I love seeing other artistic styles and subject matter.
Cheers!
Sue

Karen, I totally agree. My hobby of painting is a lifetime love of the medium - watercolor. If I sell anything, it's always off the wall, literally. I do belong to a few art groups in Phoenix, and enter into exhibits but rarely market anything. I have a website to show work but it's only $30 a year. Occasionally, someone at work will ask for a commission of their pet, but I don't charge much, it's always fun and I enjoy it.
I'm finally retiring in October, and we are traveling more next fall. I'll have my stash of art supplies ready to go! Can't wait!
Barbara
I'll try another attachment of acrylic on a textured surface. This went to a friend.

Barbara, I wanna be your friend too!
I really like your steers! They're so fresh and casual, but still tell the observer everything s/he needs to know.
Thank you for your compliment on my work. I've been doing various colored pencil things to make sure I can handle them well enough to tackle pictures of some of the cats in
my life. Big challenge for me.
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! There will be lots of places to put your talent to use! Enjoy!
Cheers!
Sue

Hi

Hi Sue. Getting into the juried show was kind of a surprise. I submitted an entry but didn't think I would get chosen. I put two acrylic paintings in. One was Yosemite-El Capitan, and the other one was a scene of the ocean and beach at Monterey CA. I will have to look for pictures to show you.
I have two spinning wheels. An Ashford Traditional, and a Peacock and a few drop spindles. Also have a small loom, but never got the hang of that. I'm thinking of selling it. It is a Mountain Loom 14". From the look at your list of hobbies, it seems we have much in common. I knit, crochet, can tat but don't often.
Yes, we live just outside of Tracy in a rural area. We've been here for a long time.
I will try to find some of the watercolor files.
ttyl,
Karen

"Drawing" with Ink:
I had a landscape drawing class last night, with water as the main subject matter. It was my request to the teacher, since I'm so bad at it.
This week we were to use India ink. Unfortunately we only were allowed one hour of the 2 1/2. With brushes it was much like using watercolors, but in grayscale. Ink does behave differently, though, especially in that you can never lift it completely. It does bleed and spread beautifully for washes.
Does anyone else here use brush and ink? Would you share?
Here are my (lousy!) beginner efforts: It will be interesting to see if I can make any improvement! Pointers, anyone?
Cheers!
Sue

Thanks, Sheila. They're growing in me. Would you share some of your work? It sounds interesting.
New MH, eh? What do you have? Our 40-footer is a Thor diesel and we love it. Lots of storage, but never enough for all my supplies and equipment. If it were only watercolors or only fiber work or only ... you get the picture!
Fulltiming must be harder than snowbirding, but they do have similarities. What do you carry, out of all the "stuff" you have. What will you need or want. What can you just buy on the road or do without.
I don't envy you this task, except that it leads to your FT adventure. Now that, I might envy you.
Pictures, please? It's good to hear from you.
Cheers!
Sue

This is one I did on 6" x 6" copper panel. I do a lot of dog portraits for people too.

I really like that! Very impressionistic, and yet I feel I could almost walk into it and feel the sunshine. You seem to use the copper itself as if it were tinted paper, as it contributes to the color base.
Do you finish your paintings with a lacquer coat or something? Do they get framed or are they hung as is?
I'd love to see your dog portraits. Could you share one or two? It would be interesting to see your style there.
I'm planning to do a cat portrait in colored pencil as soon as I feel confident enough. In the meantime I'm doing other pictures to gain skill with the pencils.
Thanks for sharing. How's the decision-making progressing? My sympathies!
Cheers!
Sue

Hi, I have just joined irv2 and would love to connect with other artists while traveling. We are based in northern IL but are planning to snowbird this winter. Please contact me if you have the same idea.

We spent five days at a KOA campsite close by Santa Cruz CA earlier this month. I took my watercolors with me. I managed several sketches and one good size painting.
This is two of them. The last two were just sketches of some of the plants in the area. The waterlily was from a photograph, not anything we saw on our camping trip.

Fun sketches! Isn't it neat how you remember a time and place best when you take the time and focus on capturing this way?
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
