Smile Anyone letterbox?

We stumbled across letterboxing a few years ago on another camping-related forum and couldn't wait to give it a try. It's now one of our favorite family activities and part of practically every camping trip.

Ace Blazer..welcome to iRV2! It sounds like Letterboxing is an artistic type of geo-cache.. or it at least has some similarities.

Can you explain the basic differences?

Also..What type of RVing do you do?I did not see any type of RV in your profile...and we all like to know what you have -in case we have questions or need to answer a question.

Again-welcome to the forum!

Letterbox caches are also included in geocaching, along with puzzle caches, where you have to solve the puzzle to get to co-ordinates and multi caches, wehn you find one it directs you to another and eventually you find the last one.

Letterboxing is another "treasure hunting" sort of pastime/hobby somewhat similar to geocaching, though its roots are quite a bit older- 1854 England, I believe. In a nutshell, it involves following a set of clues to locate a hidden waterproof box containing a (usually) hand-carved rubber stamp and a logbook. The person finding the box is also carrying their own stamp and logbook. You log in to the box using your signature stamp and stamp the box's image into your personal logbook. Nothing is swapped in or out of the box.

As a family activity, we enjoy it because it leads us to a lot of places we would've never seen otherwise. The artistry of some of the stamps is amazing. It's an inexpensive hobby since following the clues doesn't require a GPS unit. Basic start-up supplies are a stamp, a logbook of some sort, and a compass for some of the clues.
