Big Green Egg Mini

Love my full sized Big Green Egg. I found a BGE mini on Craigslist and am thinking of buying it for the MH. I know even though it's a "mini" it's still pretty heavy. But I'm interested to see what experiences people here have with the minis? Can you cook enough for 3? What about smoking ribs, butts etc?

If never pay full price for a mini, but $300 with the stand isn't too bad if it can do a decent job of cooking for 4. We have our Webber Q which is great, but I love charcoal cooking.

I have a Large BGE at home and love it. I thought about getting a smaller one for the RV but after looking at sizes, weights and capacity I don't think any thing smaller than Small or Mini-Max (same grid squat egg) would be good for two people and nothing smaller than Medium for 3-4 people. One of my big concerns is weight in the compartments and breaking it bouncing down the road. I don't want to have disassemble it between uses to protect it. I also considered all the extras that go with it - charcoal, BGE accessories, and wood chips or chunks for smoking, rub containers, cutting boards, and tools. when I started adding up all the things I use when I cook on my Large Egg it wasn't worth it.

After giving up the idea of a BGE on the road I started to look for alternatives - I am leaning toward a nice gas grill because I have an propane outlet for a grill under the awning and it would provide the easiest cleanup. Last week camping with friends one of them had a Charbroil TRU-infrared Grill2go and it did a real nice job on steaks. I haven't done much charcoal before the BGE but I came across these on Amazon Robot Check and Robot Check that might be something for me to consider.

I already have a Webber Q grill. We've had it for several years and it's really good. I was looking for something coal based. I looked at the Mini Max and while it is looks good as far as capacity goes, it's way too heavy and too expensive for my tastes.

There are several mini's around on Craigslist so I'm going to take a chance and try one. I've seen videos of cooking a whole chicken in one, so it is possible.

Generally we eat quick meals so I'm not sure how much this will get used anyway. It's more of an experiment.

by the way, we have a propane outlet too on our MH and I was going to get a quick disconnect and use a hose for my Q grill. But after thinking about it, I'd rather keep the grill further away from my MH and not have the hose laying on the ground to trip on. So I just keep a big propane bottle in my basement for the grill and my campfire in a can.

We too have owned a large BGE for about 7 years now. We loved it and really wanted a mini for our camping adventures but couldn't get beyond the size...
Then we found a MiniMax! Camping is much more interesting now.
It is probably about 70 pounds but we (I) haul it out any time we are staying for more than a night or two...
I actually like it a bit more than the large in terms of cooking. It is simply an awesome thing!

We have a BGE Mini Max, eat in 90% of the time, and use it for almost every dinner.

It was "Must Have" for the RV for my wife who is a great cook / chef to my benefit . I wasn't sold on it originally, but all it took was one meal!

It "just fits" height wise into one of our bays, and does take both of us to lift it in. It sits on a 3/4" piece of plywood to distribute the weight and I can pull it out and clean it off easily. We have a large bin for the special charcoal; the bin helps "control" the smell and dust that we found when we just kept it in the bag.

The other night we had several pieces of chicken and a 1/2 rack of ribs, which would was a meal plus leftovers for the 2 of us, so yes, I think you can easily cook for 3 or 4 people on it. We just got home yesterday day from a short trip, the menu included, Pizza one night, a full rack another, a huge steak, burgers, more chicken.....

Ended up buying a Mini max instead of the mini. I think I would have been disappointed with the cooking capacity of the smaller one.

How do you transport your Mini Max? Do you tie it down? Just put it in a storage compartment or the back of your car/truck?

As I noted, I put the Mini Max on. 3/4" piece of plywood in a basement bay. The feet on it, do not distribute the weight well, as they are not flat.

The bay I have it in is basically full, but not tightly packed, so there is little room for it to move, but from what I can tell, it doesn't move around anyway. I thought about putting some eyes in the bay or into the plywood, and using bungee cords to hold it in place, but don't think that is really necessary (at least we how my bay is packed).

Enjoy!

We simply let it ride! It's been in the back of the truck for something like 20,000 miles now with no issues at all! If there isn't enough "stuff" to wedge it in Iwill tie it to one of the tie downs in the corner to keep it in place...
