sailing canoe
I am also interested in getting a sailing canoe for the Minnie W. How do you transport them? I currently tow a H-12 but would like something that I could launch without backing down a ramp. Any suggestions?

I carry mine on top of my toad. And keep all the gear in the trunk of the car.

Mega-kayaking fan. Mainly lakes and calm rivers/streams. I swear by Sea Eagle sport kayaks. Check out their website. Great product, good warranty, easy to transport since it packs away into a large duffel bag. I've been using it for 4 seasons and have yet to get a hole, rip, or puncture.

Kayaks work everywhere from the river to the arctic ocean. Canoes are suited only to flat calm water. If I am traveling and I am looking for a boat to carry, I am choosing the one that works wherever i end up regardless of where that might be. Something else you may wish to consider is a zodiac inflatable. Breaks down for easy storage, a small outboard doesn't take up much room and uses very little gas and they are inherently more stable than either a canoe or kayak.

Never seen the open canoe white water nationals?
FWIW I consider kayaks as boats for folks too lazy to learn to paddle.

X2. I have also paddled my canoe on trails in Okefenokee, the Everglades, and a few other places, where the vegetation was so tight, that you couldn't possibly get through it with a double bladed paddle.

Then you have never truly Kayaked. While the vast majority of Kayaks are extremely stable some types are exactly the opposite and take way more finesse and skill than any canoe.
And white water caning is awesome, done it many times, but its a lousy recreational boat for all around use. The only reason they stay afloat in the rapids is because we put airbags in them front and back in order to prevent the water from overwhelming them. Not a great feature when you want to carry a tackle box. Take the airbags out and run the rapids and I bet you don't make it 20 feet into a class 5 before your swimming.

Actually have kayaked a fair amount. There are a few places where I would choose one over an open canoe. I'm thinking ocean or maybe very big lake. Most places including some pretty lumpy water I would rather have an open boat. If you keep it upright you do not need airbags. OTOH they do make recovery easier. Same as kayaks. ;-)

Yeah, recovery is definitely easier on a kayak

We like our Ocean Kayak Trident 13' units. DW and I use them when we can. We are older so we went with "sit-on-tops" because it is much easier getting out and in. We are from the Midwest and use them on lakes but have also used them in Florida (Crystal River area) and Texas coast. They have a 29" beam and I have stood up on mine while fishing and the water was flat. They are about 60 lbs and we carry them on top of our Jeep. I purchased a small two wheel kayak trolley to move them when the distance to the water is more than a few yards. They will be going with us to Florida again after Christmas.

I have the best of both worlds. A Folbot Greenland II. It can be setup for solo or tandem paddlers. It fits in a trunk or bay of an RV. It has a payload of 600Lbs. You can put on a rudder, Sails, Outriggers, Spray skirt. I have had mine since 1991. Amazingly the price is within $300 of what I paid for it new all those years ago. Greenland II - Folbot
And here is a video of the sail set up on a Folbot.

We have canoed and kayaked for around 40 years. Now we mostly flat water tour in lakes, rivers, explore marshes, and like to overnight camp away from the RV home base. We still find a few rapids now and again though. We also go out on the Great Lakes occasionally and hit some sizable waves. We use the canoe when we take our 60 pound dog. It's a 16.6' Mad River Malecite which will do anything we ask of it. Great for rivers and lakes (original design that won the white water championships). Very stable and has a low profile so its not real susceptible to wind. Ends are flared so it cuts through waves with no problem.
We also use the kayaks, mostly for exploring and day trips without the dog. At 14.5' they are a little more maneuverable in marshes and tight streams. With that said I think I'm switching back to an open solo canoe for when I go by myself. I had one years ago before we got the kayaks. Getting one that I can use the kayak paddle with as it's the most efficient when soloing and covering some distance.
I plan on getting a Placid Boat works Rapidfire At 22 pounds it will be easy to portage between lakes and ponds which we do a lot. It has secondary stability like the Malecite so it's very stable and tracks well.
If I had to choose between them and only keep one it would be the Mad River Malecite as it would do everything we want together.
One other thing, "Canoes are suited only to flat calm water." is bull. It depends on the design of the canoe. If your canoing experience has been limited to a flat bottomed aluminum canoe you probably think this.

In my experience kayaks are much more stable then canoes. I have a two person kayak and love it.
