I like drag boat racing also BUT it can have it's unexpected fatalities just like any Motorsport. One of our long time local racers found that out.

This is what we use at the drag races to be comfy, and this is what I race. Pic is at the last race in Pomona CA.

John was a friend whom I knew for many years. It's the ugly side of any type of racing and it makes it even tougher when they are a friend or acquaintance. Fortunately, this has became a rare event and most of our work is putting out fires and pulling drivers out of sinking boats.

BTW, all of these drivers are OK. Some walked away. Scotty Lumbert had a new boat and raced the next day.
First pic looks like the Bay Town gator pit.....yep, back in the day....

229 in an open cockpit with nothing between you and a blown fuel motor, just inches behind you. That record will never be broken.

The 1st photo is in Marble Falls, TX. The 2nd is on Mission Bay in San Diego. As far as I know they don't race in Baytown anymore.

In 2012, Matt Hagen came to Marble Falls to get in a drag boat. We gave him a full capsule dunk certification and he went through and completed his required license passes. Of course he didn't intend to give up his TFFC any time soon. I was one of the divers in the water with him, and he passed all the rquirements, no problem.

You may recognize the boat. It's the same boat in the 2nd crash video, that crashed in 2013 in Phoenix.
