Fun Places to Flat-water Kayak?

We frequent the southwest and love to kayak on our trips. Wondering what really cool places everyone has kayaked?

The Florida Everglades has many good places to kayak. We go during the winter when the weather is not unpleasantly hot, insects are relatively few and the wildlife isn't protecting mates or nests.

Full moon paddles are lovely on open water, although bug spray is an essential part of the equipment.

It's like being the last people on earth sometimes.

BTW, your photos make me want to get back out west!

Cheers!

Very nice. Did you find these locations from a book or word of mouth? We will be traveling to Florida and states in-between and will have our kayaks. Looks like nice places to explore.

The FL places I know are in SW FL around Naples. They are best in the cooler months, unless you are sea kayaking the coast.

I go with a small group of friends, which includes a couple who are full time there. They do all our planning. They go out a lot, fishing from their kayaks, and paddling out into the bays and so on during the warmer months.

If you're going that far south and you're interested, I can put together a list of entry points for you.

Cheers!
Sue

.

We are new so we usually go in the canal and Black Creek as we live in Black Creek. We are pondering a new trailer to carry the car, motorcycles and kayaks. Then we can go more places when we travel.

Pictures? New to kayaking rather than new to RVing? Having a dinghy or toad will expand your possibilities a lot.

We had to buy a new roof rack for the Wrangler ragtop, and then bought a new Cherokee...all to accommodate my kayak. (Well, to be honest, DH wanted the new one and my arthritis demanded it.).

Our closest water at the S&B is a small river, the Salt Fork of the Vermilion R. (IL) The next is a small lake in a forest preserve, mostly mowed and manicured around the edges. Not much forest right there.

I've not paddled the river yet, but have a friend who has. When the spring rush of tending her sheep, other critters and the garden slows down, we'll plan a paddle.

Cheers!
Sue

South of Lake Havasu, here are some favorite spots of ours for flat water. These are a combination of the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge and the Colorado River south of the Parker Dam.

One of my favorites... Flat water kayaking.
We have 2 Ocean Kayak Capri's. Not retired quite yet but am always looking for good places to kayak.
We have several nice spots here in the Pacific NW!

you need to do the Colorado River below GLEN CANYON DAM at Page AZ. All flat water. 15 mile run down stream BUT you need to have the boat carried up to the dam on one of the Colorado River Discovery pontoon boats from Lee's Ferry. You can camp at many places on the way down if you want.

Hi Ken & Deb,

I've found this website to be helpful in locating launch sites: Canoe & Kayak Launch Map | Places to kayak & canoe | Routes - Paddling.net

There are corresponding android and iPhone apps, as well.

Take care,
Stu
