Whites makes a decent one. Just pick your price range and have fun. I haven't found much however, I have a couple of friends that have more than paid for their equipment. White's Metal Detectors

Shovel selection is your call... all I can suggest is that it is a nice one

As someone that has spent many hours detecting, I might be able to help a little. First, decide what you want to locate as no one detector does everything. Detecting is normally broken into three groups, coin hunting, relics and gold detecting. I started looking for coins and moved out from that. Good general purpose machines are White, Garrett and Fisher.
White makes a good relic machine. Good gold machines are Tesoro, Mine Lab and Fisher. These are just my opinions and sure they will vary from others. Hope this helps some,
Jerry

As for the shovel, I would get a small plastic childs shovel SO WHEN THE WIFE HIts YOU OVER THE HEAD WITH IT, IT WON'T HURT THAT MUCH

I have had good luck with the whites IDX ( an older model and still works great). I will be looking for a gold detector soon. You may want to look at Kellyco a metal detector dealer. I have peuchased from them and saved money and shipping was good, plus they answer questions on line or by e-mail.
Metal Detector Super Store - Kellyco Metal Detectors

Good luck detecting and happy adventures,
Barney

I have a Whites MXT which works great. You might not want to spend that much so spend some time on the Kellyco web site checking out all the machines.

White makes a number of different models, with various prices. I have had my White for a couple of years. Lots of fun. Something else you might want to get is a small hand held detector, they are not that expensive, but saves a lot time actually finding your treasure once out of the ground.

As to the shovel, I agree a small plastic one would be best. It could still hurt, but not nearly as bad as one of those big, heavy, metal ones.

+1 I have a number of detectors and the MXT is in my opinion one of the best all-around machines. Relic, Coin & Gold. There are other options, but you can't go wrong with this one.

Thats a nice machine, you will like it...Good luck

Oh and good luck finding just the right shovel for the wife..She will be so happy with you, looking out for her the way you do..You may want to get her good pair of gloves as they will eliminate blisters from the shovel and will also keep the dirt from beneath her finger nails.

Happy Adventures
