I'm a performing songwriter (though I rarely have time to perform these days). I travel with my mini-Martin and my Breedlove. We stayed at Desert Trails last January in Tucson. They have regular jams and performances. Because of scheduling I only made it once but it was fun.

I play Bass Guitar and was wondering if there would be enough jam opportunities out there to justify hauling musical gear with me. I just purchased my first RV and am going to head out soon and I love to play music.... are there any specific places, RV parks etc, that feature jam sessions? Would be cool to work them into my travel plans. Any recomendations would be great.

Drummer here. Been playing since I was 10 when my dad brought a drum set home for my birthday and told me I had to take lessons to keep them! I'm 48 now! I love pounding away to 80's metal and think Rush's Neil Peart is God!
Playing an electronic kit now but don't consider it exactly RV-portable. If any of us ever hook up, I'll take the wooden spoons to the pillows to drive the rhythm section!

Question.... Do you have any CD's recorded? (No not interested in buying more CD's just now, Running out of room for 'em)
Google: Roger Hurricane Wilson,, He may be able to provide advice.
Many campgrounds, and some other places, depending on your style of music, may be willing to let you play in exchange for either free parking, or for the freedom to sell your CD's. Roger works this way with one of the membership chains I happen to belong to (I have one of his CDs).
His is not the only act I have come across, Some (him for example) in membership campgrounds, Other in Privately owned open to the public NON membership campgrounds (Have his CD too), some in places like a Cowboy Church near me (About 150-200 yards near), and so on, all depends on the style of music.
Folk, Western, Gospel (the church), Bluegrass and 50/60/70 soft rock seems to play best.
Even I've done a bit of singing, but alas, need an accompanist since I do not (yet) play an instrument other than voice.
You will need your own sound system.. And in that I can make a suggestion.
Heil Sound
They make microphones and assorted other professional sound stuff. Bob Heil (Who by the way is a Theater Organist) is a member of the Rock and Roll hall of fame (neat trick for a Theater Organist) due to his sound systems.. they are that good.. I should be getting one of his mics (not a performance mic, this one is optimized for speech, not singing) in 1 to 2 weeks.

Well lets see, I have taken a D28 and a D35 on the road in my Motor home, never had a problem with the guitars, course I haven't worn a hole in any like Willie has in his martin, that he calls "Trigger".
Yep, leave that nice guitar home and let someone steal it or pawn it when you pass on, cause that's what will happen. If you have it, play it or give it to someone who will.
What I'm saying is YOLO, dammit, enjoy it and let others enjoy what you do with it, does a beater sound as good as your Martin or J-45, I don't think so.
Now one of my favorite places is off of I-65 exit 46 south of Nashville. Go east about 1/2 mile and the RV park is on your right. They have a stage and lots of folks jam there. You are on a little road called Bear Creek Pike.
When you leave the park, turn right and continue down Bear Creek Pike about 4 miles to a T. You will be looking at MarcyJo's a little restaurant ran by Marcy Feek, Rory Feek's sister and Joey Feek, of Joey and Rory fame. Their farm house concerts are on RFD TV and they are great people. They might even be serving you if you are lucky. If you get there for breakfast, try Rory's Overall breakfast, see if you can eat it all. And don't judge the book by its cover, the outside of the restaurant looks like a really OLD country store, but the FOOD is outstanding.

Don't play any more but I still have a '65 Fender Precision that I bought in 1970. Big mistake though sent it to Fender to have refinished. Was Candy Red went to natural. Every thing original except body. Boy did I mess up. Gruhn said I cut value in half

I find there are few GOOD bass players on the road. Fun Valley has a couple very good one's, but could always use another.

I do perform quite often in membership parks and independents as well. There is the opportunity for the seasoned solo performers to be able to perform in the RV park system while traveling full time. Some will exchange your stage time for several nights stay while others will compensate. It requires a lot of time and networking. I am continually working at it. I am also a biker, so happy that I was able to book two shows in Sturgis this year. Good luck with all of you...there are numerous jam sessions available.

Hi, everyone. I play the mandolin and enjoy playing WITH other people, not necessarily FOR other people. We have often run into groups that say that they are getting together for a jam, and when we arrive, there's a whole stage-type set up, with amps and mics and other electronic gear. I still have fun, but people often call songs I don't know and since I can't see the other players, I don't know what the chords are. I prefer to jam with the musicians in a circle and the 'audience' arrange themselves on the periphery. This all goes to say that we enjoy jamming with bluegrassers. If you like to get together with people who can jam all night and are very open to people sitting it, try to put some bluegrass festivals on your schedule. There's one coming up in Wenatchee, WA, and after that in George, WA. There's a free bluegrass festival in Fossil, OR over the 4th of July and that is a real Jammin' jubilee. And there's the High and Dry Festival in Bend OR in Aug; only costs about $15 or $20 with very nice dry camping. Check with the state bluegrass associations along your route and you find lots of people to play with.

I have a '66 Martin D-21 and take it with me often. It's 49 years old, and I bought it new for $400-... I don't like what some of the mass-produced stuff sounds like so I take it with me often.

I run a small Bluegrass festival in Salemburg, NC. Camp Out Jam Out, (COJO). It's geared specifically toward folks that like to jam. I play bass, guitar, and mandolin.
