Not a hobby but a serious time consumer

98 Ford Explorer Sport 4X4

I had two of these as road service vehicles, sold one of them when I retired and kept this one. It had a bolt break in the jackshaft which mangled all the timing chain tensioner assemblies. Since this engine has a timing chain in the rear as well as in the ones in front of the engine the engine has to come out to replace the rear

This happened ove three years ago and it's just getting done now.

The cause of the failure

I even owned a GMC, I always leaned towards Ford but this one was a real workhorse

JohnRR sounds like your job was your hobby, thanks for sharing the pictures.
I owned a couple of Auto repair centers and they were my hobby but after 25 years it got old. When I started to work for the Government it was time to quit.
Darn they make it hard to manage a business.

John, I sure like your new shop... Do you have more pictures of the final set up?

I had originally planned to work til I croaked but then the MH got in the way, after being gone for five months or more a year it got to the point that the cost of insurance, permits, fuel and general upkeep had me scurrying around for 24/7 for only slightly more than break even.

I could not envision sitting around with nothing to do, I bought the MH 9/2010 and one thing is for sure there has been no sitting around, I've got a few more bigger projects to finish then I can get into the tinker stage. I had the shop for about 33 years, after 20 years in the Air Force.

These are some of what I thought were the highlights of getting the shop built once the few bigger projects get finished shop organization will be part of the tinkering process. They are the only pictures I really have of it at this point.

That is a real shop! Love it! Thanks for the link.

It looks like your shop is about as big as the house! I assume that you are now fully out of the business location. Just curious, did you sell it, lease it or what?

I can't say enough as to how impressive it is. You certainly have room to do some "tinkering", for sure.

I sold all the trucks outright, and had a so called auction for a lot of stuff then rented three 8X20 storage sheds for the rest then just walked away. I kept two trucks and the storage yard to keep my hand in it but as I mentioned once I started to look at the numbers it was time to leave.

It is as large as the house and mimics it as well in all aspects. I sure would liked to have it bigger, as it stands now it is by far the largest non commercial garage in the city of Marquette. A lot of the stuff on the wall shelfs are new parts dating back to the 60's most if it still in the OEM packaging one of my tinkering tasks will be to put it all on eBay.
