Air noise when turbo is spooled up?

Hello all!

I have a 2012 Cummins 450 isl on a spartan mountain master chassis. Today I noticed that I cannot climb a grade and maintain speed on our trip yesterday. The turbo is showing boost on the dash but I can hear forced air when the turbo is boosting. I checked all the clamps around the inlet and outlet and they are all intact. It's still making power but not like it used to. Could the waste gate be stuck 'open'? I also looking for any linkages near the turbo and don't see anything. No check engine lights or any other measurements out of normal (temp, oil pressure, etc.). Anyone seen something like this? I'm going to call next week to try and get it into the shop but I still need to get back home in the condition it's in. Thank you in advanced for any assistance!

We had thi s\happen to our Cummins 450 ISM and it was a cracked turbo pipe. It sont hurt to drive the coach like this, but as you say, power will be limited - especially going uphill.

Like Mark, I had a badly cracked turbo pipe also and just drove it that way until I could get it to a shop.

What boost pressure are you showing on a hard pull?
I agree though probably a cracked pipe or charge air cooler, possibly a blown connector going into the CAC. Noel

There is no waste gate. It's a variable vein turbo VVT.

Its showing 30.9 - 33.6 on the info panel. The loud hissing sound became a high pitched squeal during the ride home. The squeal seems to be gone, and the hissing isn't as loud as it was. Its home now, with an appointment for the shop next week. Hope its something simple and cost effective to repair...

Thank you all for the information. I will post another update once I have the diagnosis.

Sounds like charge air cooler (aka intercooler) leaking. The turbo is building boost, but the cooler is letting pressurized air escape.

A blown exhaust manifold gasket can sound pretty weird from the drivers seat also.

It turns out one of the boots was leaking. They replaced it along with adding a second clamp. Seems to have solved the problem. Thank you all for the input!!
