DEF tank

What a PIA, hauling 5 gallons of DEF from the front driver's side to the rear passenger side every time we fill-up.

Our ISX 600 appears to be using 2 - 3 gallons of DEF per 100 gallons of diesel.

Further, the DEF tank is recessed to far to enable proper filling. The little access door on my Cornerstone is useless.

I've already ruined one pair of shoes. Spartan needs to fix this!

I'd suggest buying a small, battery powered transfer pump. Fill up 1 gallon jugs from the 5 gallon pail and fill with those. If the 1 gallon jugs can't be used to fill the DEF tank, then use the transfer pump for that too.

Or just go to a truck stop and use the bulk dispensers. Way to easy and cheaper.

Reading his post it appears his DEF tank is on the curb side of the chassis, same as mine. Bulk DEF dispensers are on the street side and I have not found one with a hose longer than 6 feet.

I was told by Freightliner they just build them the way the coach manufacturer asks for them.

This is one of the times I wish some engineers and designers had more practical experience than they appear to.

When you are between two pumps at the truch stop, you can grab the DEF from the one on the curb side.

Put a flat tank on top of your rig, under the floor, in the wheel well-etc. Gravity feed the Def into your vehicle DEF tank.

Fill up your storage tank at a commercial station.

The problem is that pump belongs to the truck in that lane and they dislike us enough already to try to use theirs.

I've seen several posters say that truckers don't like MH drivers. Personally I have not found that the case. I often talk to them while fueling and find them quite cordial.
Maybe I've just been lucky.

Ummm... you've got a bigger problem than the poor access if you're using 2 - 3 gallons of DEF per 100 gallons of fuel. I'd guess that you either have a DEF tank leak, or a serious injection rate problem that needs to be addressed. Hope it's a simple fix.

cheers,
Joopy

I was under the impression that 2-3% DEF to fuel was normal. Thats what I use for my DD13. Am I wrong?

DEF

With our 2014 Excursion 33D we get 474 miles per gallon of DEF. I agree with a previous poster, check for leaks or overdosing. Good Luck.

2% is the target or 2 gal DEF per 100 gal of diesel.
Assuming your measurements are accurate, one gallon of DEF should equate to about 50 gallons of DEF. 474 miles devided by 50 gallons equal 9.74 MPG.
Remember though that DEF is not used at a steady rate but rather in bursts when a regen happens.
