After driving my new coach about 4,500 miles, the check engine light came on.

Kevin at Cummins Tampa connected his computer to my coach and the fault code indicated a problem with the engine cooling fan control circuit.

The fan is powered by a hydraulic motor, and the fan speed (variable) is controlled electrically.

The Cummins folks found the electrical solenoid was missing from the fan motor, and the connecting wires were tied back on the wiring harness.

Fortunately, Spartan has a fail safe design, and the fan will run at full speed if the electrical circuit fails, to prevent overheating.

Two questions which may never be answered are, how did this get out of the factory, and why wasn't the check engine light always on.

My mileage since day one has been 5.9 MPG, and it should be higher, but the fan constantly running at max speed hopefully was the cause of that.

The two pictures show the original motor without the solenoid, and the new motor installed with the solenoid attached and connected.

Just a follow up to add some more info.

My problem started at the Tampa Super Show, and I was unable to find someone to look at the problem.

I ended up speaking to a V.P. of Spartan, who directed me to Kevin for assistance.

Not long after that, a Director from Spartan called me to ensure I did in fact get the assistance I needed.

Spartan was there when I needed them, and I am reassured I made the right decision to go with Spartan.

Final chapter.

After Cummins Tampa installed the new fan motor, the check engine light was extinguished, and all seemed well.

It wasn't long before I realized the fan was running at maximum speed all the time and not varying it's speed as the cooling demand changed.

Here at the FMCA Convention at Perry, two Spartan techs found the problem.

The wrong wires were connected to the fan, and that kept the fan running at maximum speed constantly.

The Spartan techs connected the correct wires, and TESTED the functionality of the fan, and now the fan is working as designed.

The Spartan techs know their product and were able to make the proper repair in short order.

I'm still a Spartan fan.

Groan.

Spartan gave me a hat, and that's enough to keep me happy after getting the fan fixed.

I may volunteer to work the display one of these days. Scott Brady was telling me about it.

My first trip with the variable speed fan working properly instead of the fan running at maximum speed all the time, resulted in a 10% increase in mileage.

The more I think about this, I'm convinced the chassis never left the factory this way, and something happened after the chassis was built.
