Needed to change my fuel filter so I called Spartan & ordered a new one. After it arrived I got to thinking how I should go about this. So, I break out the Spartan chassis manual, a 3-ring notebook chocked full with arcane facts and NO instructions whatsoever about fuel filters - or air filters or any really useful information at all for that matter.

Plan B - I do a search on irv2.com & come up with answers, but some conflicts as to pre-fill, not pre-fill the filter. Hmmm . . . .

Plan C - call Spartan (probably should have done that in the first place )

This is what I was told for MY engine/chassis - he looked it up by VIN. It may not be the same for yours.

YES - you do pre-fill the filter as this engine has no lift pump. You fill it from around the edges so that the fuel passes through the filter to the center (from where it is drawn into the engine). NOT THROUGH THE CENTER HOLE. Fill it as full as it will go.

Pre-fill the filter before removing the old one as fuel will continue to siphon out the line & you need to replace the filter quickly.

Crank the engine & as soon as you have oil pressure, up the RPM's to about 1200 so that if there is any air in the line the the engine will not die. He didn't say what would happen if it did die, but I really don't want to find out.

After cleaning up, sit back, pat yourself on the back & have the adult beverage of your choice, or 2 or . . . . .

Mark

My coach came with a Spartan chassis manual, a Cummins engine manual., and a bag full of other manuals. Engine filter info is in the Cummins manual ...and my ISC DOES have a lift pump, and the manual says NOT to pre-fill the filter.

Why would you not pre-fill any fuel filter? I've changed my share of fuel filters, probably an average of 1 set a day, and I always fill the filter right down the center hole until the filter is full. Losing prime can really suck up your day, so no matter if lift pump or not, we fill. The only motors that ever really seem to tweek me are the Mercedes in the freightshakers. Losing prime in those can be a real long day.

Why would you not pre-fill any fuel filter?
- to avoid introducing contaminated fuel to the system ...
- because the engine mfg'er specifically says DO NOT ...

Just because "we've always done it that way" doesn't mean it's the right way to do it THIS time.
