I have a 2000 Newmar Kountry Star on a Spartan Summit Chassis. I have about 30 degrees of play in the steering wheel before the wheels respond and wonder if there is an adjustment to the steering that could reduce some of this play. There are only 45,000 miles on the unit and it has been aligned and has a steering stabilizer. Does anybody have a similar problem?
Thanks, Dave

This is a difficult question to answer. It all depends on what Spartan put for your steering components. These components can change over time and even within a model year. Consider calling Spartan at 517-543-6400. Ask for tech support. You will need the chassis vin #.

Dave,
Check and see if your steering gearbox has an adjusting screw w/ locknut that takes a standard screwdriver. If not, get a trusted shop to check for excess play in the tierod and all other linkage.

I have a 2000 Gulfstream on a Spartan Chassis and am experiencing the exact same problem... I replaced the steering gear box but still have the problem.
I just spoke to a friend who spent a lifetime working on heavy (military) equipment. He said the steering gear box if adjusted properly should prevent this so what to do.. this may take some guts.
The factory says it has to be removed and bench adjusted (that's shop work), my buddy says adjust (tighten) the adjustment screw (if it has one) 1/8 turn at a time and test in between. If you go too far the steering will tighten up causing other problems... don't force the steering test. Raise the front a little (light on the wheels) and check the steering in place for easy operation after each adjustment then road test.
