Tire replacement???
Hi all:
We own a 2007 mh which we bought last fall with about 17000 miles on it (currently has about 21000). While having some work done to find the source of various error codes (the mechanic took a 6 week tour of my Cummins, blah, blah, blah, (a long story for another time) , he mentioned my Goodyear G670's should probably be replaced. (like the $2700 he took from us wasn't enough)! He claimed they were 5 years old and even though the tread was like new and there was no visible signs of sun or heat damage, we should get new shoes for our baby.
So how about it campers...was he just looking to sell me 6 new tires, or what?
Thanks for your input.

Unless yours show signs of cracking, most dont recommend replacement till 7-10 years... Save your money.

The following is opinion except when discussing my own tires.
Sure he was trying to sell tires. But there is a long running school of thought that RV tire have some suspense date depending on their age---not wear. Many people subscribe to it and adhere to the 5 to 7 year mark.
For the record I do not subscribe to that view but at ten years of use I am replacing all my tires even though they look fine and have plenty of tread wear left. I know the history of these tires. My brand reccomends that ten years is the limit to set. So I am doing that. Probably these tires have more servicable life but this is the amount of risk I am willing to accept. The rubber is ten years old, tires hold alot of weight, a blow out in a MH is not fun, so it is time.
I have a friend with 13 year old tires---so he accepts more risk---he has never has tire problems.
I'm not against replacing tires at 5 years---I mean who could be? It's up to the owner of the tire. I am comforable with my decision about my tires and have never had tire trouble. Others tell sad tales of tire blow outs etc; so they do what they think is best.
Your situation is that you do not know the history of the tires, if you did you would be at advantage in deciding what to do (you actually did not ask what to do). Were they always run with the proper amount of air pressure? Have they suffered any unusual blows from road hazards? Has the motor home always been loaded properly not exceeding any limits? All these things can cause premature tire failure. And the tire can look just fine from the outside.
You will get many opinions when discussing tires---opinions, when facts are needed. .
Goodyear is a name brand tire and there are millions of them running around more than five years old i'm sure---they also have their detractors ------but each person must do what they think best based on what they know for sure.
But yes he was trying to sell you tires, trusting/hoping that you subscribe to the 5 year rule or could be convinced of it.

We replaced our Michelins after 8 years and I KNOW for a fact the front were run almost their entire life as Michelin gave us a letter on their letterhead allowing it. According to the charts the tires needed 125 psi, the wheels would only take 120 so they rerated the tires to the 125 psi load with 120 psi.
Never had a bit of tire trouble even when doing that.

You said "he claimed they were five years old." Check the date code and find out how old they really are, and, nobody said you have to buy tires from him...lots of tire dealers out there.

OOPS:
Meant to say:
We replaced our Michelins after 8 years and I KNOW for a fact the front were run almost their entire life at over the weight rating for the pressure as Michelin gave us a letter on their letterhead allowing it.
