Why change fuel filters?

My history with diesels goes back 50 years and tractors on the farm. Filters were only changed if they began to cause a reduction in power. (It was an obvious reduction.) On my MH I have always carried spare filters and have never changed them at my yearly oil and oil filter change.
I know many others feel that the fuel filters need to be changed also but why.

Also on my KSDP the filters are located where they are very difficult to access. I am considering relocating them beside my battery compartment but that would place them about 18" above the exhaust muffler. Would the additional heat cause problems??

Have a nice day - Darrel

I tend to agree with you to a point. A few years ago I talked to a Cummins engineer and he told me to replace the primary fuel filter annually and the secondary fuel filter every two years. I have been doing that since I talked to him.

My 2005 Cummins ISL engine had a fuel injector failure at 1 1/2 years and 12,000 miles. Cummins replaced it free under warranty and never asked for proof I had replaced the fuel filters.

The best insurance is to do like you and carry spare filters.

Maybe the REAL question you need to ask is would you rather have to change those "very difficult to access" fuel filters somewhere on the side of the road in who knows what weather, or would you prefer a dry & safe shop where you have more time, etc? The answer to the question may make you change them at some reasonable interval, OR make you relocate them sooner rather than later.
