I ride motorcycle, ride bicycle and inline skate for fun and a workout. Considering all of the Northern Tier folks who grew up on ice skates and hockey I was wondering if there were people who share my hobby/exercise. I have skated in AZ, CA, NM, TX and NE. Omaha had perhaps the best trails I have ever skated with a walking bridge across the Missouri River to Iowa. Check out this site: SkateLog Forum - Inline Skating Forums - Quad Roller Skating Forums

When I was a kid, all the kids made our own ice skating rink (Hockey), we used to make our own hockey sticks sometimes and we never wore helmets! Not sue how we survived all of that!

Thanks Driver,

Many on the forum figure they have reached the age where skating just isn't in the resume' despite youthful adventures doing it like you. It is a risky sport, but not as bad as one would think. I thought I'd find out if there are any other like minded souls out there.
My Dad was from New Hampshire and I was raised in ALB. I had always roller skated but could find no roller rink when we moved to Maine. He bought me a pair of ice hockey skates, as he played hockey in his youth, and turned me loose on an ice rink. Higher speeds and really tough on the ankles as I recall. Only did it for awhile and gave it up for other high school sports. Got into inline skating in my early 50's and have never looked back. Great exercise and keeps the balance and reflexes in shape.

I thought I'd move Bosque Bill's great photo album of the beloved trail to this thread. I am getting ready to put on the inlines and go 16 miles. I joking laugh as I say this but I prey on bicycles looking for the ultimate pass and then pray I can get around them. It is the very young, the very old, the very weak as all others pass me. Met another gentleman, my age or older, trolling the trail on big wheel inlines. It will be fun to skate with him!

I'd recommend getting out of those RV's and doing some bicycling or skating as winter is coming!

Seems like there is an app for everything. I used the Garmin 405 for skating, running, cycling etc.. Downloaded the Endomondo App, free, and Garmin is history. This App may fit other Smart Phones. Skated 15 miles today and the phone let me know my time, distance and speed every mile, has a log of previous workouts, has a graph and map for each workout, lets you know your top speed and approximate calories burned. All of this while you can listen to music and take phone calls.

if you get to vancouver (bc) you will love the seawall; miles and miles of paved routes for everyone (walkers, runners, skaters, etc.) and many areas are separated for the various activities

regards, peter

Growing up in Ohio back in the 60's we would Ice skate on ponds. Then the local swimming pool Assn. built a new parking lot with a curb all the way around. They would flood it in winter to freeze as an Ice skating rink. Then moved to California as a teen in the 70's. Yeah crystal ball light over roller skating rink listening to DISCO. Only time on skates since then was during Desert Storm. A fellow flight crewmate turned me on to rollerblading to stay in shape. Haven't been on them since about 92 or 93.

It is excellent exercise and very easy on the joints. I never got into the disco scene on skates or off. I did manage to get a Leisure Suit. Have you thought about starting again? There are trails all across this country. I generally check out new trails on the bicycle and then skate it if possible. There is a 60 mile skate from Athens to Atlanta that sounds like it might be fun to try. They even have a marathon. Just about 1200 calories for 15 miles!
