My convertor/inverter does not "hum." To find out if it's working you will need to locate it. It's got to be in one of the service bays. Don't know what brand you are looking at, but it should have some lights on it that tell you what its doing. The explaination of these lights is usually printed on the side of the convertor/inverter. If not... get the model number and look it up online. The convertor is the side that charges the batteries. It should be putting out 13.8-14.X volts while charging. You should also see this voltage at the battery terminals. Take a reading off the battery terminals and then unplug from shore power and take another reading. If its working you should get a slightly higher voltage when connected to power, with good batteries.
Hope someone else can add to this, but more specific info would help...
