First time buyer some questions please

HI there,

i am about to head out on a 10 month tour! i am comparing Gas verses Diesel and of course comparing what you get for the money. meaning interior wise.

i have test driven several Gas RVs, Winnebago, National Dolphin lx, just 2 days ago test drove a four winds Hurricane. sadly i learned afterwards that the 2007 hurricane is not a quality RV. at least from what i have read and what i felt from being inside it. i felt it drove great but lack of storage and inside lay out was not good.

remember i am living in this for 10 months!

so diesel or Gas.

i am looking at a 2000 Class A Coachmen Sportscoach 381KS and a 1999 Newmar Newmar 4081 MOUNTAIN AIRE

i like the coachmen better as it has one slide the moutain aire has NO slides.

i am familiar with mountain aire and know they are top of the line but what about the coachman?

so two questions

gas or diesel for the 10 month tour
we will be boondocking quite a bit as well.
and
what can you tell me about the coachman

oh by the way my budget is $50,000 or less.

thanks

sam

This post is not in the best forum for the question.

Hey Mods...maybe move it to the general MH discussion?

But, I will offer some general comments...
Newmar is a high quality mfgt. Coachmen is a good mfgt that is known for lots of entry level and economy models.

Both companies are still in business independantly after the recession...unlike many who are out of business or acquired other companies.

Having said - how Newmar and Coachmen are RV's from companies with VERY different business models...it is significant that you like 2 units made within 1 year of each other.

You should first and foremost, pick a floorplan that YOU like best.

The gas vs. Diesel decision will be less easy to address. Both have perks, and both have problems.

Generally, Diesel will cost more to acquire and run, but the fuel economy and engine lifespan of the Diesel will even-out the difference. Where the Diesel is superior is in load capacity and in larger RV's where there is no gas equal...like the BIG Diesel Pushers. No one makes a gas engine for a vehicle application that is over 500c.i. (there is the 496/8.1L).

The bottom line when buying used (like it was for me) is to be a smart shopper. Find a floorplan that you like, then take your time finding a well-cared-for model for a price that fits your budget.

Best of luck

thanks for the input. what i have learned with 4 months of searching and research is that there will be quirks with any RV i buy. but there are a few to stay away from in general.

i guess my biggest concern is that i am basically going to be a full timer (at least for 10-12 months) so looking for info and advice as to best kind of rv for that.

i will copy and paste the original post in a more neutral area.
thanks again

Hi Sam,

Are you traveling solo? What will you do with the RV after the 10 months are done?

We lived in a Coachman 35' for 4 years. Coachman is not the same company today as it was in the early 2000's. They are now owned by Forest River. I would say our Coachman was a mid level model and a top model for the company. We had no major issues in 4 years. I have no experience with the Newmar motor homes. I don't think you would go wrong with either model. Pick the best floor plan that works for you. But also consider the basement storage and storage inside. These storage compartments can sometimes make your experience good or bad depending on what space you have versus the space you need or the ease of using this space.
