Who has disabled their side cameras?

The rear camera is of significant help but the side cameras are worthless in my opinion. My mirrors are my friends. When I put the turn signal on, the rear view disappears from my monitor and is replaced by the side view that I might understand if only I could study it for 5 minutes, which I can not do safely. Images are distorted and distance and proximity are difficult to judge with just a glance using the side cameras. That is not true of the rear view camera.

I plan to disable or unplug, the side camera inputs so I can see out the back when I put my signal on. I like the rear view to see clearly if I have passed a heavy truck or am still overlapping the truck. I give plenty of clearance, as we all should. The difference for me is knowing I am by so I can start watching for a signal that it is okay to move back into the right lane.

I disconnected the turn signal input long ago. You are right, having that rear view disappear as you are changing lanes and some dummy races up to change lane around your toad is very dangerous.

I had to modify my rear camera mount so it would actually look back just as a rear view mirror does. That is, the camera would tilt down directly but not come back level enough to see beyond the toad.

When is city traffic I will select my rear view and also the right camera. This keeps me aware of those other dummies that like to sneak up next to me out of mirror range.

Here's another opinion.... I don't mind the side cameras for a couple of reasons. First... When you are changing lanes you can glance down to the camera and make sure there is no car in your blind spot. I have yet to see a good side mirror that clears the entire length of your coach. Second... I try not to make any "sudden" lane changes. I examine the rear camera and side cameras before I move. I usually don't turn the signal on and leave it... I just move it to the half position and let go of it when I start to make the move. Third... The side cameras can be used when you are backing into a site. Just turn the signal on and make sure you are not going to run into something on the side of your camp site. Just another opinion...

From RJOL: <<<The side cameras can be used when you are backing into a site. Just turn the signal on and make sure you are not going to run into something on the side of your camp site. Just another opinion..>>>

I hadn't considered using them in this way. Good idea although I found seeing anything, unless it was right on top of you, to be very difficult in the side cameras.

I would keep them if I could do so by manually tuning them on or off and only if I could shut down the auto function connected to the turn signals.

Anyone know how to do that?

My Voyager monitor allows me to select combinations of cameras. As mentioned, I like the rear as a large part of the screen and then the right camera to keep an eye on the blind spot along the right side. Works great when in heavy traffic and I need to navigate about the lanes.

It's done. Learned some things along the way. First you can't simply disconnect the side cameras. If you do when you activate the turn signal it will change to a blank screen. That's no help. So I went after the triggers. Downloaded the manual, found the trigger wires for Cam 2 and Cam 3 and cut the connection. Had to pull the dash apart to get to the harness. No big deal but cost me more time than I had figured for the job.

Since I didn't disconnect the side cameras I can still use them but only by using the "select" button on the monitor to cycle through all three views. When I use the turn signal, I retain the rear view (the actuating triggers for each side camera are now disconnected). Exactly what I wanted. Also the new camera has a wider and taller field of view so I can still see the hitch and front of the Wrangler but also I can see behind the coach into both lanes on my right and left and also behind the Wrangler for some distance.

Couldn't be more pleased with the final result.

Should have added, I called Voyager Tech Support and asked about monitor settings on my 8 year old AOM713 monitor. There is no way to turn off the triggers via monitor settings and they also confirmed that to stop the turn signal change to the side cameras I would need to snip the trigger wires. Your (YC1)Voyager monitor must be a different model. Settings would have been an ideal way to stop the turn signal trigger and saved me two hours but I still got the desired result.
