There are three camshaft gears and three camshaft position sensors made for the 8.1L Vortec engine. The problem that folks run into, is that the first two sets of gears and sensors for 2001-2003 model year 8.1L's require a camshaft position sensor that has been discontinued by GM and has no aftermarket support. Unfortunately, you cannot just buy a sensor for a 2004 or newer 8.1L and use it in your 2001-2003 as the parts do not interchange and must be replaced with the same year parts or the engine will not work properly.
The 2001 camshaft gear / sprocket and camshaft timing position sensor were revised in 2002 and again in 2004 to maximize the benefits of Magnetic Reluctance (MR) or “mirror image” ignition timing. To “read” the new changes, the cam sensor also had to be updated to match both the newer 2002-2003 and 2004+ camshaft gear. To update the sprockets and sensor, you must swap the camshaft timing gear, camshaft position sensor with conversion harness and the new "tall sensor" timing cover. The stock computer will run this updated timing set without modification or tuning required.
