Bill I still have the one I got from Mike D. years ago. Do Surge Protectors ever wear out? Or they just more high tech from the products made years ago?

If your surge suppressor uses a varistor aka MOV or voltage dependent resistor, the surge protection will eventually wear out. A single sufficiently large voltage spike can fry them. Multiple small surges will eventually degrade the varistor to the point where it is no longer effective. But better the suppressor give up the ghost than the stuff in your rig. I have a whole house suppressor installed in my B&S. Now on the second one, the first one lasted about 8 years. A good suppressor will have some kind of indicator to show that it is still functional, my whole house unit has a pair of indicator lights - one for each side of the 220 volt feed.

1 Gallon water bottle
I cut a 1 gallon - rectangular, not square - water bottle in half that does the same as the new shield if not better. Do not cut off the narrow opening in the top - just slit it and put it over the cable going to the pedestal.

Many of there products are listed as UL and CSA approved. I am not sure if the new products are or not, it does not say on their website. However if it is of concern I would suggest contacting the manufacturer for verification. I know my EMS-HW50C is both UL and CSA approved.

Thanks...looks like the portable ones are not UL listed nor CSA approved as the detail specs are not listed on their web site....unlike the the hardwired ones such as your EMS-HW50c.
Any comment regarding liability on using the non UL listed and non CSA approved portable ones.
Appreciate it.

I had my portable 50A model replaced with the new model. The cover will not work with my power cords. If your cord has a fixed handle for pulling the cover will not close. It will even pop out of the clips with very little pressure. I started to use my extension cord and put the surge protector either in my power compartment of under the motorhome on top of something.
