12 Volt Bay Heater

I have a 12V heater in the utility bay of my 2009 Safari Cheetah. According to the manual it is set to come on at 40 degrees and turn off at 55 degrees.

It is not working.

I verified 12 volts going to the heater. 3 wires going to the heater, assume they are common, neutral and ground. I measure 13.7 volts across 2.

Assumed it was the snap disc thermostat that was bad. I pulled the leads of the snap disc and connected them together to bypass the thermostat. My thinking was that the snap disc acts like a switch. At <40 degrees it closes, completing the circuit between the 2 attached wires.

If my thinking is correct it would seem to indicate a problem with the heater.

Any thoughts.

I would like to correct the issue before I head back north where I will need the heater,

Thanks

I would think that you could ohm out all the internal parts and find which item is bad. I would look for an internal fuse are fuse link. also check all connections and the ground for loose or corrosion. Do you have a manual for this heater, if so this may help to find parts to fix and a guide to troubleshooting it.

Got the numbers, thanks Wayne really appreciate it. Probably try to schedule them for Saturday. This week is full of meetings.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I have gone as far as i can go with the multimeter. To get the heater out I would need to pull the plumbing panel out and I can't get the time, busy week of meetings here. I will try that on the snap disc thermostat, it's on the side wall and easy to reach.

It could be the thermal resistor internal to the heater. Mine has burned out twice. Radio Shack has them for $.60 each. Mine were just soldered in, easy to change.

How long between burn outs? For $.60 I may push to find the time to get the heater out. Sure cheaper than calling the mobile tech.
