1977 Xplorer 307 on Dodge Chassis. I got questions...

Ok so the first is, I currently have 8R17.5 tires on this RV. I am told it can be changed over to 16" tires if I get Ford rims. for it. I guess they have the same bolt pattern. So with the 16 inch rims, what size 16" tire should I use that will fit safely?
second question, I have a 440 engine with a 3 speed. I want to swap the trans for a 4 speed. I know there is a bell housing change that will be needed but other than that, I am not sure. I suppose mounting and lines will need reconfigured.
Any helps on these issues? Thanks.

I had a Dodge 440 and the Dodge 737 three speed transmission on a 1976 Landau motor home. That 737 transmission was super strong. 166,000 miles, on transmission rebuild at 100,000 miles, and it was my fault it broke. If your thinking better gas mileage, forget it. My motor home was on a M-500 Dodge chassis, all motor homes of that era were either on a M-400, 500, or 600 chassis depending on it's size, and they all came with 8R19.5 tires, are you sure they are 17.5?

Thanks. I am not so concerned about the gas milage as I am about not wanting to work the engine so hard at higher speeds. I don't drive it over 55 mph. The size is 17.5 as even tho a class A motor home, it's only 26 ft long.

Xplorer made a solid motor home. Good luck with your renovation. Don't worry about that Dodge 440, it will outlast the coach.
