Going to look at this tomorrow. Any thing special to look at? It only has 55,000 miles and has the Ford 460 with the John Deere chasis. Any input appreciated!!

If you haven't had an RV before and don't know what to look for the best thing you could do is hire an RV mechanic to inspect it for you, money well spent. One of the main things to look for as far as I'm concerned is water leaks, look at the ceiling for stains and walk around every square inch of the floor to check for squishy spots.

I have been looking for a while. Kind of know the general stuff. More curious about specialty stuff. But thanks for the reminder. I will crawl all over and under it for sure.

We still have our 1989 Encounter. We've had it for 20 yrs . They are good RVs. Over time many things needed to be replaced. Try every system, look at the roof very closely, see link below. Look for signs of water damage or rust on chassis parts & hydraulic lines. Question all rubber belts and pressure containing hoses, tires, etc for age. Review the manuals I've collected & posted to Index of /89JD
Good luck!!

Our first MH was a 1988 Fleetwood Pace Arrow on the JD chassis with the 460 and Ford tranny. Bought it for $17,000.00 in 1998, cheap enough considering it had ~ 60,000 miles on it. After replacing the refer during our first trip in it, and rebuilding the tranny TWICE during the next 5,000 miles, I sold it on Ebay for $11,000.00. The day I was to deliver it to the buyer, the master cylinder started leaking so bad it had no brakes. Back then the MC was still available for ~$1,000.00 plus labor. All told, we had two happy days with that coach-the day we bought it and the day we sold it.
I hope you have a much better experience than I did, but anything that old is going to be a money pit, IMO. 2016-1990 = 25+ years old.

My input is the coach is 26 years old, mileage means nothing. maintenance means everything. Expect the worse, hope for the best and hope you are handy.

+1 On a coach this old mileage is not the important issue.

"Hi everyone.
I have an old RV. 1989 Gulfstream Sunstream Hi Rise. 454 P30 chassis.
I recently bought her and have had nothing but problems. Recently, I drove to have new brakes put on. When I returned home, I parked and turned the rig off. I immediately tried to start it back up to move where I was parked, but it wouldn't start. I checked my battery connections and discovered that one of my cables had come loose and the post melted. I bought an adapter and put it on the other free positive post. Still no start. What I DID notice, though, is that one of the relays had been attached to the negative post on the starter battery. I have no idea how this rig EVER even started). I replaced all cables and attached them appropriately. Now, the rig still won't start. I get a single click and then a constant beep sound, which seems to be coming from the starter........."
If you are shopping this coach as a "Project Coach" and are willing to put in the countless hours and money, I say go for it.
Otherwise consider the age, maintenance (or lack of...) frustration, money, and other factors you are going to HAVE to invest in this coach. If you are willing---go for it.
Otherwise take a step back and think about it. HARD!
There is a real reason that the engineers went to fuel injection just as fast as they could, and it is because carburetors suck!
Ask any mechanic.

Welcome to iRV2.com You should start a new thread rather than tack your question onto this one.
I believe you will find there is a label somewhere on the Genset (or shd be) that warns AGAINST running it with the cover off. THAT will actually CAUSE the thing to overheat. Once the "board" gets heat damaged it is prone to shut you down after only a short run time. That is what happened to mine, after running it without the cover in place.

Well, we passed on the MH. The mileage was great, 55000. The thing was lived in not driven. The interior was shot. The folks that had it before did not keep up on repairs. It needed a lot to be nice again. A money pit and work horse for sure!!
We loved the floor plan and on first look we thought cool, a little TLC and we are good. Upon a closer look there was just way too much wrong and needing attention.
We walked away.

I had a 1993 with the 460.... I now have a 2001 with the V10 and 2 slideouts.... NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE. I enjoyed the 460 but the V10 is a REAL workhorse motor. SAME MPG but way better performance!!! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the slideouts so if you can add a few bucks to your purchase, go with a V10 newer GeorgieBoy. Owned em BOTH and I will say that my 1993 only cost me 6500 and my 2001 cost me 18,000 but I'm able to go wherever, whenever with the newer one. Good Luck
