1995 Chev 454 Gen V with FI pro/con
This is the first rv that I've owned that has the Chev 454 engine. As you can see by the amount of posts, I'm trying to learn more about this unit I just bought. My neighbor drops by asking about my new to me purchase, and when I tell him what engine I have in it, he says those engines are a piece of crap ! He said a mechanic friend told him, that they are only good for about 25K miles and then need to be rebuilt. They have a bad history of failure. Mine has 73K. But runs great. Is this guy full of BS or what Would appreciate any pro or con comments.

My 88 Bounder had 110K miles, 454
My 93 Kountry Star had 109K miles 454
Traded them in as we moved up to our DP. Both ran like champs. The key is keeping maintenance on them and fix the small things before they become big. So in my view your friend is full of it.

Upon my purchase of a 16 year old 454 I changed the oil and added a quart sized filter. I changed the oil at 2K intervals thereafter 'till I was satisfied the oil was cleaner than the last change. Now I'm up to 5K per oil change. Oil is the lifeblood of an engine. Seems the RV engines are badly neglected. Engine now has 40K more than the 34K it had...runs jus' dandy.
At a dealer I pulled a dipstick on an RV I was contemplating...it had burnt asphalt on the end...I wouldn't even think of considering that unit, nor one that had perfect oil and no maintenance record...in some ways an older RV is a crap-shoot.

I vote BS.
Looks like a neat little RV. You found the brochure, right? It's at the resources section of the Winnebago website, lots of good info (wiring and plumbing diagrams, parts catalogs, etc.) there.

I have run the 454 in wrecker and they last the same as 350 they had crab and no overdrive the GA mileage is consistent on a 454 with a 7/16fuel line run to it only so much gas can go through it and it use all it can get I work min hard and they would use a quart of oil a day

454
I have a '93 Winnie with a 454 and have 57000 on it. Runs like a charm. I am am a retired ASE certified mechanic and I can tell you that guy and his "mechanic" are full of crap. Good luck with the rig.

Agree with everyone EXCEPT your neighbor! LOL The 454 is one of the better engines to come out of Detroit. It won't blast up 6% grades at 50mph but it will get you to the top. But it doesn't respond well to a floored gas pedal.
