So I decided it's time to freshen up the Old Winnie by attempting a DYI paint job. The old finish was dull and oxidized and the decals faded and cracked. I spent the last couple weeks pulling off the old decals. I used a variety of methods to accomplish this. The decals that were in decent shape just required a heat gun. The ones that were dried out and cracked I had to get serious with an eraser wheel. The only problem was the dried cracked baked on decals on the metal hood. A heat gun wasn't cutting it and the eraser wheel burned right through to the primer. Next step will be next spring. I plan to tape it out and sand and paint it. I haven't decided on a method yet, leaning toward just rolling it with Rustoleum cut with mineral spirits, as I've seen others have pretty good results. I am wondering if I should scrape all the seals first, then paint and reseal or reseal first then paint? I will try and upload some before and after pics as I go along.

Here's a closeup of the cracked decals. Interestingly the worst sides were the front and right side.

And here it is now, with all decals removed. The last two show the hood. I still can't get all the glue off even with mineral spirits. My plan is to take care of it when I start sanding.

I kinda like the simplistic colors. I may not even re-stripe it. I will paint it white again up top but want to change the bottom color, maybe a very dark shade of green. However, I would appreciate any and all feedback on color choices and painting methods. Thanks all!

Sometimes acetone will dissolve the decal glue. I've also had some luck with Goo Gone.

Re think the dark green sides-it will turn your motorhome into a oven in strong sun light.

You can buy the stripes on line-any color or width needed. Try Ebay/Amazon.

Abaerga Several years ago I did some new stripes on my 1996 Allegro I considered painting them but I found this site Vinylstriping.com They had a great selection of colors and sizes of stripes. They are a 3M product and are super easy to install and have held up well over the past several years. The rolls are 150 feet long ideal for a motorhome just peat and stick. Check it out

Keep them shining
