1997 31' Winnebago
Looking at a 1997 31ft Winnebago Brave. Question,, this coach has two factory ac's on top but owner says you can only run one at a time? The coach is wired for 30amps and has a 4000 watt generator.. it's a nice older coach and would suit our needs perfectly but I'm puzzled about the ac setup..
Thanks!

Guess you need to find out why. Look at the size of the AC units, they will have power requirements on the label. Look at how they are wired in, see if it is some sort of retrofit wiring. The spec sheet says they are both 13.5K units if factory stock, but the 31 also had the option of one 14k BTU AC. It might have been prewired for a 2nd AC by the factory, or it could have been done by a qualified/ unqualified electrician. Remember, you are buying a 20 year old project. Some people have upsized the AC units. One unit runs from the original wiring, while the other goes to a box that allows you to plug the 2nd AC into a unused 15 amp plug on the park utility pole. Your 4000 watt generator is close to the minimum needed to run two ACs, with nothing left over.

That's not an unusual setup on coaches of that vintage. Changes that would allow running both AC's on shore power would not be that expensive or difficult if you have some electrical talent. It would involve using 2 power cords to the pole.
Depending on the size of the A/C's you may also be able to run them at the same time with the gen set, but it would be close. You'd have to be careful not to run the microwave, coffee pot, toaster or similar, at the same time.

My 96 Itasca Sunrise 31 has the same set up. 30 amp service, 4000 watt Onan, two AC units. One forward in the main area and one in the rear bedroom. There's a switch most likely over the microwave that you set for either the front AC or the rear AC but not both. While both of my AC units work fine I usually just run the front unit. Good luck.

I just looked the coach over briefly and didn't do a close inspection. This would be our first land RV but we owned a 45ft houseboat so I have some limited RV knowledge. Our boat had two roof RV ac units but it was wired 50 amp with a big enough onboard generator to power everything on the boat..
I'm assuming both units on the Brave were original equipment. I'm just puzzled by why the coach would come from the factory with two ac's that can't be used at the same time..
Thanks for your response...
Mike

Ah Mike, that's easy. Why cool the back sleeping area when thou are in the front, or the front when thou are sleeping in the back.

I would feel better if I had the option of using both units at the same time. It gets hot in Oklahoma, lol.. Better to have too much cooling than not enough..
