1997 itasca 454 vortec misses on hill climbs
1997 chevy 454 vortec on p 30 chassis. Engine stumbles an misses when climbing hills at power. Rpm fluctuates 100 to 200 hundred.
miss can be felt in coach,it also looses power. Ok on the level and when engine is cold. Check engine light does not flash or come on.
replaced the following parts; engine computer, rotor, cap and coil, 2 sets ac delco ign wires and plugs, crank shaft sensor, two foward o2 sensors, looked inside of cats and cleaned maf sensor, replaced in line fuel filter and the internal fuel tank pump.
pulled out all of my hair. Help!!

Did you change the ignition module in the distributor?(If it has one?)
I had a car that would act like that when the ignition module heated up. The dielectric grease dried out and caused the module to go bad.

In most circumstances, an engine miss that's intermident is a sign of starving for fuel. When your engine is cold, the computer enriches the fuel system much like the choke on a carbeurator does. When your on level ground, the fuel demand is less than when going up hills.
As for electrical miss, they are constant and will only be corrected when repacement such as plug wires, plugs etc. JMHO, Happy trails and travel safe.

Same thing happened to me pulling a small hill while towing my jeep,,, always had a small exhaust leak,, turned into a full blown burned valve,, no compression in one of the cyl. I didn't want to believe this .. so I replaced a lot of the things you talked about ..hoping I could fix it... stop what you are doing,, do a compression test,,, might save you a lot of money,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, David

I have a 1989 carbureted Chevy 454 on a P30 chassis and have had the same problem in hot weather. I have replaced everything that my mechanic and members of the internet family can come up with. After several thousand of dollars I still have the problem. If you find a cure please advise us all.

I had an '86 P-30, 454. It was trerrible climbing hills. I replaced the engine driven fuel pump, passenger side, lower front-- and that was the problem. It was starving for fuel pulling hills--

As a long shot, check what some call the "secret" fuel filter. This is at the top of the street side frame rail, about halfway between the gas tank and engine. We had an '83 Winnie with a GM carburator 454 engine, and every time there was a hesitation on a hill, replacing this filter solved the problem. I replaced our '95 Safari TREK 6.5 GM diesel with a '99 TREK with a 454 fuel injection gas engine. The 1999 shop manual shows the same fuel filter.

i think you fixed my problem for me. I had an external ign control module that i replaced and so far with a short trip it looks like it did the trick. You are truly a life saver thanks for responding.
