Hello all. I am really new to this RV thing and am seriouisly considering purchasing a 1999 Southwind 32' coach. I have identified two in the area and have a question that one of you may be able to help with.
Both units have living room slides, however on one unit the storage compartments are attached to the slide while on the other coach they are not. I don't know if they are earlier or later models or this was an option. I am sure there are pros and cons to either arrangement.
Any information would be appreciated.

Welcome

to iRV2. We're glad to have you here. You've come to the right place for answers to your questions.

Storage bays that come out with the large slide are what we have on our Bounder. We also have storage bays that don't come out that are under our bedroom slide. IMO, I prefer bays that come out with the slide for these reasons <UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>Easier access because you don't have to squat down underneath an extended slide to get in them.
<LI>You don't conk yourself on the head/shoulder or back because you forgot the extended slide was above you when you stand up. Been there; done that - *ouch*.[/list]Good luck with your search. Please post often of your travels & feel free to ask questions here. We all love to help.

Some of the negatives of compartment attached to slideout are;
Reduced weight carrying capacity
No pass thru storage

Another negative for me is that you'll need at least another 3 feet clearance for the doors to swing open. A 3' slide plus 3' for the doors to swing has caused me problems when the power pedestal, water faucet or a tree is located in that area. If the site has a concrete patio on the door side I may not have enough space.

8.5' coach + 3' slide + 3' basement door swing = ~15'. Many sites do not have that amount of room on their pads.

Below is my summer site. I'm against the concrete patio and I can't get one of my basement doors open because of the water faucet.
