1999 Winnebago Brave 5500 Onan Generator
Hello,
I have a 1999 Winnebago Brave that has a 5500 Onan Generator. The generator works great when it is sitting still. I can run it as long as I want with or without a load on it. My problem is, when I travel and I stop at a rest area, the generator will come on, but goes off within 30 seconds or as soon as I put a load on it. Then it will not start again until I have been parked overnight. It cranks but will not start. Once I have stayed parked for at least 24 hours, it again starts up like it should. The fuel pump was replaced last year. Any suggestions?

Does your generator blink error codes? You mentioned a new fuel pump, have you checked the filter? The shut down could be a result of overheating or low oil level, but the 24 hour delay doesn't fit. The oil should be right at the full mark, many report shut downs when going around a curve or corner. Overheating might be harder to diagnose, I'd start by making sure are vents are open and everything is clean to dissipate heat.

Where would I see the error codes? I have checked the oil level and it looks good. I haven't changed the filter yet but plan to do so in the near future. I will check and make sure the vents are open. Thanks for your response!

I would attach a hose from the generator fuel pump to a gas can to eliminate a problem with the fuel line going into the vehicle gas tank.

When high ambient temps exist or when towing a load, my generator will do the same symptom that yours has. Engine, transmission, exhaust system, a/c = a lot of heat. I have come to the conlusion, if your genny is in the rear as mine is,that I was experiencing vapor locks in the fuel line. I have plans to insulate the fuel line with foil insulating material. I have heard that it really helps. Good luck

1. I'm not an expert.
2. It is sounding like a loose connection somewhere to me.
3. Refer to #1.
Good luck!!

Probable no blink codes on a 1999. Next time you stop in a rest area, try to start it from the switch out on the generator itself.
If you look, I believe there is a prime mode on that switch. Hold it down and listen to the fuel pump tick. It should slow down when primed. Then try starting it.
It may also need the choke opened. That's a little rod just under the air filter. Move it one way or the other while cranking and see what happens.
One more thing. Open the gas cap and close it after stopping and then try starting it. Could be a vent issue.

Thanks Twinboat!
You are correct, there are no blink codes that I can find on the 1999. I have tried to start it on the generator itself when I have this problem, and it does the same as inside. It turns over but won't start. I have also tried priming it, but still nothing. :( I haven't tried opening the gas cap and closing it after stopping. I will give that a try the next time I'm out.
