2003 5.5K Onan Generator Code 45
2003 Fleetwood Southwind, bought used with 55,000 miles and little to no maintenance. Generator would not start after Coach fuel pump replacement (tank had to be dropped). 3/4 tank fuel, oil is full, primes for 30 seconds, will not start after cranking. 2010 RJay suggested "checking slip rings for corrosion." More information would be helpful, or is this an"authorized Onan dealer" visit?
Thank you.

Don't know exactly what generator model you have, but Onan has a pretty complete website if you Google your model, I'm sure you'll find exactly what code 45 means for your generator.

Randy,
Error 45 is s speed sense fault - which can be 3 different things. But first you mention a potential fuel issue.. Pull the fuel line off the carb inlet, aim the line into a can then push and hold STOP to engage the fuel pump only. Are you getting any fuel? If not and the fuel pump is running, you can always get a 1 gal can of fuel and a seperate fuel line and while looking underneath the genset you can attach your own fuel supply to the INLET side of the fuel pump. This will help determine if you have pick-up issues in the coach tank or not.
Back to the 45 error code.... can be caused by brushes, belt or stator:
Pull the brush block assembly (2-10mm bolts - EASY access) and inspect the brushes.. should freely move up and down against the springs in the brush holder. Check slip rings that the brushes ride against. Should be clear copper in color - dark black means they need cleaned. (very common - can be repaired while unit is in the coach)
With the brush block out, push START momentarily and make sure the slip rings are spinning with the engine. If not, either broken belt or frozen/seized tensioner. (common - requires removing genset from coach)
If the brushes are ok, slip rings are ok and the rotor/slip rings are turning true with the engine cranking, then it could be a shorted stator. The speed sense circuit is obtained thru the stator and if it's shorted anywhere in the windings it will cause a 45 error. (rare - requires removing genset from coach, separating alternator from engine)

Found leaking in-line filter at Float bowl, replaced. No gas from Coach fuel tank line. Dropped generator fuel line into portable gas can, primed and generator started. Warmed-up, then loaded with an air conditioner. Generator stumbled but continued to run.
Any advise on Fuel Pickup line, other than drop the Tank?

You could try compressed air blown back up line to fuel tank. If it's just a little crud blocking the screen it will be blown off. Be sure to have gas cap off. If it works, you'll know the tank needs cleaning. If it doesn't work, it might mean a kink in the fuel line.

Follow the line back to the tank. It is hard to see, but you can usually take a mirror and flashlight and check that the generator fuel line was hooked back up. Also check to see if it looks like the connection was tightened.

The stumbling is exactly normal when a load is applied. It only lasts at most a second, then operates as normal with load.
