It is not original to this coach. Freightliner is getting in touch with Monaco Coach to see what they recommend as well.
Could this be why the alternator that is in the coach now failed because it wasn't a rebuild?
Thanks so much!!
This advice is priceless. Keep it coming!

The OEM alternator shouts be close to this:
The alternator would have been a Leece-Neville LN-4884J
The above came from Monaco tech support when my alternator went south after 14 years on the job. This is a 200 amp and yours may be a 270 amp.

Question.. How long typically would alternator last on a coach?
Ours is a 08 with 72k miles.
New generator only 18 hours on it so far.
Thanks!
🤔🙂

There is really no "typical". Heat will kill an alternator before its time. If your coach is regularly stored for days/week without shore power, the best thing you can do for your alternator is to crank the generator and let it do the heavy lifting with putting amps back in the batteries. My OEM Leece Neville stayed on the job for 13 years and was just rebuilt last month. That is longer than typical. I would guess that 8-10 years is closer to an average life. A motorhome can be pretty high demand.

Just noticed you said "new generator". I'm guessing you have a 10KW Onan. Did the OEM have to be replaced?

Yes the generator had to be replaced by the dealer.
Ok Freightliner through Monaco has found an alternator.... details on that to come but $900 in labor! Yikes!

Because engine alternators have the same windings, brushs and slip rings as 120 volt generators, lack of use will also effect their life.

That's an insane labor price. My engine is a Cummins ISM and I paid 2.5 hours labor for R&R. If you have the ISL the alternator is more accessible.

The labor breaks down to $150 per hour. 2.0 hours labor for the diagnostic test and 4 hours to replace the alternator. Monaco is suggesting the Leece Neville alternator. Freightliner has an AC Delco. Same price same warranty. The LN is 200 amp. The AC Delco is 240. Both OEM.
Thoughts?
By the way.. y'all are awesome for all your responses!

They should be ashamed to quote those hours. I would go with the LN because that is what Monaco designed the charging system around.

Update!
Freightliner finished installing the new alternator last night around 8pm.
Freightliner said started, ran it, battery voltage where it needed to be 14.6.
Went to pick up the coach this morning... won't start. Dash display low battery. So they had to jump start, which worked, now we are waiting for them to re diagnose if needed.
QUESTION....
Should the coach have been plugged in to shore power? Once we do get the coach home... does it need to be plugged in to shore power? (Coach will be stored indoors in a heated building).
The dealer said we can go from 50-30 down to 110 just to keep the chassis batteries charged.
Thanks group!
Nicole
