Welcome ernsue to irv2.
Problems with Southwind
Workhorse brake problems
There is a recall with the Workhorse brakes that the dealer selling both coach's should tell you that the recall has been completed on them both Southwind and the Newmar if it has a Workhorse chassis.
Newmar Canyon Star
The Newmar could have a Ford or Workhorse chassis.
There are two Recalls on 2009 Newmar.
The floor plan would be a big option in a decision between them both you will have to live with it.
PDI LIST for either one before purchase.
Good luck in your quest.

I like Southwinds, but I'd give the Canyob Star a slight edge in that match-up. Both Newmar and Fleetwood offer post-warranty factory service (a plus), but I think Newmar offers a bit more "love' to their customers if you want/need to go back to the factory for anything.

Hi ernsue,
All other things being equal, the Newmar gets my vote.

I like my FW & we were looking at a Southwind before we bought our Bounder. Preferred the floorplan & length in the Bounder. If you like both equally, go with the floorplan you like best &, if buying from a dealer, the dealer that will service you after the sale. Our dealer's service staff has bent over backwards & I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

Don't think you can beat a Newmar.....of course, as the owner of a Canyon Star, I'm biased.

Same here. I have never owned a Southwind, although I have friends that have had them and have been very happy.

We have 2010 Canyon Star and are very pleased.

We have a Newmar KountryStar, had a Bounder before, and a Pace Arrow before that. The Bounder had better interior storage, Newmar better basement storage. The Newmar was new, but we had a bad dealer. Newmar stood behind the coach, even to the point of paying to take it to a competing local Manufacturer for modifications the Dealer had fouled up. (They were going to pay for the work to be done at a very high end custum coach builder in the town where we live, but that builder got an order in for another $2M coach, and didn't have time). The moral, make sure you have a good reputable dealer, backed up by a VERY reputable manufacturer.
