My understanding, I have the Workhorse chassis but have been researching newer coaches on the Ford chassis, when in tow/haul mode when you apply the brake it will downshift one gear. The dealer is wrong and the last thing to do is just use the brakes, especially down a grade. I use the brake to downshift my Workhorse but there are time where I need to quickly get into a low gear for a grade. For example, if you peak a hill and there is some level before the downgrade, the transmission will up shift. However, you need to get into the lower gear at the top of the grade, not partway down. When this happens, I manually select the gear as braking to shift takes too long on a steep downgrade and you can quickly overspeed and then not be able to select the lower gear because the computer will detect an over rev of the motor and will therefore not downshift.
Hopefully this all makes sense. You will figure it out along with which gear works best on any particular % grade.
