2014 Tiffin Phaeton or Monaco Knight

This is a tough one! I've been looking to upgrade our 2013 Excursion 33 for something bigger (40), and seem to have narrowed it down to either a Tiffin Phaeton or Monaco Knight.

The Phaeton seems to have solid reviews everywhere, and relatively easy to find at a decent price.

The Monaco Knight just seems to be better overall quality, but I'm a bit worried about the bankruptcy and some people saying the Maxxforce engine is a problem.

The seem priced about the same, and I'm looking at either new 2014s or slightly used b/c they're a lot cheaper than new, and it's hard for me to justify the premium for 2015.

Would love any suggestions between the two!

I would stay with a manufacturer that will be around to provide support.

I was looking at Monaco while at Alliance Coach for some repairs a couple of weeks ago. I looked at the Monaco Dynasty (brand new) which is a much higher price point than the Knight and was VERY disappointed with the quality of construction, quality of fit and finish and the quality of the material used. For a $600K coach I would not have offered $300K. If this is indicative of Monaco, I would not even look at a Knight let alone buy one. The new Monaco is "JUNK" IMO.

Stay with Tiffin. At least they stand behind their coaches.

The '14 Knight was built by Navistar RV which was the manufacturing entity for Monaco coaches when owned by Navistar. This was a very short window and Maxxforce engines were used. These coaches are fully supported by the new Monaco which is owned by ASV. I don't believe any '15 Knights were built as the coaches were redesigned by Monaco and introduced one at a time. Currently Monaco is building the Dynasty and the Diplomat. The Diplomat is at approx the same price point as the Knight. They are also building a few Holiday Rambler models. These current coaches have returned to Cummins engines.

From most postings I have read, owners seem to be happy with the Navistar era Knight. The MF10 engine is strong and a good performer. They had some early software issues with the engine ECM but it seems to have been solved.

I have a '12 Knight 36' with the MaxxForce 10 engine. Other than the ECM updates it has performed excellent. In my opinion the Navistar built, 2010-2014, Monaco and Holiday Ramblers were built as good or better than others of the same time period. The MaxxForce engines that had issues were the larger 13 and 15 series engines. The 2015 models are all new creations from ASV with no track record yet but I would assume they would be equal to other ASV built coaches (ie Fleetwood) in the same price range.

Since you live in California, I would buy the Monaco. Tiffin does not have a very good dealer network or service center on the west coast, so the Monaco would be the better choice.

I would vote on Tiffin over Monica. We got an MSRP price list from Tiffin for a RED 33AA - base price and price of each option. Then do the following to see what you can REALLY get a 2015 Pharton for. Good luck!

We checked off the options we wanted and emailed it to 5 dealers (Sherman, Davis etc) saying "give us your best price - you get one chance, no post-quote negotiation". We found in our research that certain Tiffin dealers give 25-30% discounts on new Tiffins. And people travel to get the best price!

We got the best price (28%) from Karen Cornelius at Sherman's RV in Tupelo, MS. Emailed the other 4 places to say "thank you for your quote - we have accepted a deal with another dealer". Tho we decided on Itasca Meridian we highly recommend Tiffin Corp and Karen at Sherman. And everything was handled by email!!!

Join www.tiffinrvnetwork.com to talk to Tiffin owners, classifieds and find out about other discounting dealers.

You would only have to go to Coburg, Oregon to get factory service if needed on the Monaco. That would be a big plus in my decision making process
